I live here in the states and ive noticed much better information about digital cameras, photography techniques, photoshop tips and tricks etc in UK magazines versus the ones made here.
has anyone else noticed this?
its not a bad thing by all means i would just assume that both countries would be at the same level. the one bad thing about it is here in the states we have to pay up to 3 times the normal price in order to get that valuable UK mag... :(
oh well, ill kepp paying for them as long as im still learning from them...

Send me any of your L lenses, and I'll send you all the UK mags. I have for the past year (around 40 mags). You pay the postage mind.
We don't get many of the US magazines over here in the UK, but the ones I have seen seem to be packed with adverts. and are usually printed on cheap and nasty paper.
My favorite UK mag. is "Outdoor Photographer" which is excellent for anybody who shoots outdoors, but is aimed at landscape/wildlife photography mainly. Great mag. very well put together, great articles and not too many adverts. I read it from cover to cover and always learn stuff every issue.
Cheers

thanks for the offer!!
hehe... u are right the US mags are packed withs ads and such... :(
ill definitely keep an eye out for that mag that u described. the one that i seem to like the most is Digital Photo, it runs me about $12 US per issue but that is the magazine where i learned how to capture this image...

I can see the both of them here...
I have looked thru shutterbug fro US mags and it is still good but tons of adverts. I have also had the pleasure of reading many UK mags gotten at local Tesco (grocery store) and I really like Digital Photo. The other big advantage is that the UK mags come with CD filled with tutorials and other cool stuff. The US ones I have seen don't. I think the US ones need to get a clue and do a CD with each mag.

The UK publications are slicker and better produced. I'm not convinced that the content is much better, though. As for ads, I'm an 'ad junky', so I don't mind them. Shutterbug, Popular Photography, Outdoor Photography, and Photoshop magazines are my 'must buys'.

If it says "Photography" on the cover, I buy it. US, UK or CDN.

Hey - are you back home, Tom (or Thos)? Welcome back anyway.
As to the original issue - I get Popular Photography, and I read Shutterbug occasionally. Pop Photo is a great big B&H catalog, which is just what I need! :)
I picked up something called "Digital PhotoPro" at the bookstore the other day - very good magazine, at least as far as I can tell from one example.

I get Digital PhotoPro which I think is very good, Pop Photo just because it's Pop Photo, and Outdoor Photographer (which is a US mag in my case) and Photoshop User which is always excellent.
Pop Photo and all it's ads really upsets me and I will not renew. Too much fluff. I wish Digital PhotoPro came out monthly - I really like it. Outdoor photographer is OK but I think a good John Shaw book will give you much more value than a year of this mag. A year's worth of Photoshop User is better than most Photoshop books and much cheaper.

Digital PhotoPro is pretty much the only mag I get, they're on the right track. The UK mags are pretty good, but not as good as this. Also with the fact that I'd have to pay $12 in the US for a copy of a uk mag, forget it.
BTW having less advertising is by far not a virtue. Most any publication in the world lose money on circulation, and manage any profitability only due to ad sales. Having thicker, glossier paper costs a heck of a lot of money as well.
UK mags like Digital Photo are subsidized (that one by their parent Emap - think FHM), so they aren't making any money, and more likely losing money. Eventually that limits what you can do editorially... or you sell out like the Americans do...
