Perhaps this thread should be under a different category, but I just wanted to give my opinion of the noise reduction (NR) software, Noise Ninja.
I've tried a few pieces of NR software, and up until recently, I found that NeatImage was the best. NeatImage was almost perfect, except for one flaw. I found that very noisy images processed with NI ended up with a slight "crosshatch" pattern after noise reduction. I figured this was to be expected.
Recently, I read a very THOROUGH article comparing a large number of NR programs ( http://www.michaelalmond.com/Articles/noise.htm ).
The top three programs were Noise Ninja, Neatimage, and Grain Surgery.
Noise Ninja won all categories, but was very close in quality to NI and GS.
However, the reviewer wrote that one thing that seperated Ninja from the rest was that it did not produce a "mottled" pattern that the other software produced. That was the exact problem I had noticed. Well, I tried Ninja, and boy was I impressed. The results were as good, if not slightly better than, Neatimage, and no crosshatch problems! In addition, I find the interface easier to use (maybe not as customizable as NI), auto detection of ISO and camera seems better, and it's probably slightly faster than NI.
I used to wonder about the tradeoff between the very nice/fine noise that the Rebel produces at higher ISO's, and the potential/slight crosshatch/mottled effect that NI produces. Now I have no reservations about using a NR program.
Anyway, just my opinion and experience. I HIGHLY recommend Ninja.
5/5 stars! (BTW, not bashing Neatimage...it's a fine piece of software. Just in my case Ninja works much better)
