View Full Version : In the back streets....

Just another stroll around the city yesterday. No big story behind these shots. I found some nice scenes, some nice back streets, but due to my lack of competence in composing, couldn't get a lot into frame. These were the best I could come up with. The last one cracks me up - I got it strolling into somebody's backyard :)

I'd love to get some thoughts; CC welcome as usual.

love #1, #2 and #3 but i think #3 would look better in dramatic B&W, so i had a try:

nice shots.. the black and white conversion lcf did on #3 looks really good imo. Nice captures

i like 4 actually... sit and stare at it for a while and it gets more interesting. i only wish the brick continued on the top behind the door panel. 1 is interesting and i do think the dramatic b&w works well on 3. 2 is well composed, but the subject matter is...less interesting :)

Very much like #2 and the b+w of #3

Interesting set, Jay! Lots of textures, these would look great in Black and White. In the first pic, I would like to see the window whole. The 3rd one is great, I did a quick B/W conversion too and will post it here if you like.

Really nice shots! What lens/body did you use for these?

Thanks for the comments guys. Kato, #2 is also my fav here.

nice work! That is a dramatic bw, hard light blend? :) lcf, I actually tried a b/w conversion first with #3 but fell in love with the contrasting green and red colors I managed to pull out of the shot. Your version does look good, but I don't know if the extra texture may be because of posterization *grin*.

Thanks fishnix. I'm glad you like #4, as it wasn't a serious shot. Just a bit of comic relief while I tried a few new things with the post processing.

Thanks Pio, I'm quickly seeing that I can always count on you for having a look :) I tried getting the whole window, but with the wide angle, I had trouble maintaining the frontal composition without the typical WA distortion. Moreover, it was a really tight space (3-4 metres wide?) I was in, so I couldn't walk further back. Put your bw conversion up mate, love to have a look!

Thanks august, I'm using a 400d. The lens, I'm embarrassed to say is a 17-40L which I only got because of a fine rebate offer at the time. I shouldn't be holding such an expensive lens, as I've only been dabbling in this for a short while. More embarrassingly is that I'm not too happy with it. I plan to downgrade to a lens that's a third of the price, with a focal length of 28-105. I finally realised that all the photos I'm really fond of have been taken at a range from 40 - 130mm - hopefully this explains why I'm having such trouble with composition. haha, good ol me, blaming the equipment ;)

the BW is a nice conversion

I'm assuming you're referring to lcf's conversion? If so, I'll have to let him thank you :)

I must say, the low angle shot is a brilliant picture. the black and white is very well done. I envy that kind of talent.
I'm quite the opposite. My best picture is a high angled shot.

I find the bins distracting in the first shot, but love the second and third. Also like Icf's B/W effort.

Interesting images :)
