Sorry to be such a dork, but could you explain the significance of Boston to a humble Brit?

You can tell a Boston accent because most people from there don't pronounce the R in words. It's how I knew a sales rep here in Calgary had lived there once about 20 years ago. Seems he never did find that r. :)
