Well, its now a fact rather then conjecture - black computers are faster then beige (see below link). So its no stretch of the imagination that Canon purposefully handicapped the Rebel on yet ANOTHER level... I know that some of my friends in Korea and in Moscow are working on a instant color correction kit achieved just by changing 3.35 bits in the firmware... stay tuned. 8)

Your right!

When I lived in Arizona 18 years ago I had a black Volkswagen GTI and my friend had an identical white one.

On some lonley desert highways my GTI topped out at 117 MPH, my friend's at 115.

But for lenses the opposite is true: the white ones are usually faster than the black ones..... 8)

Ha,

so black color adds to the car's Cx value ? With my green Celica I topped 122 mph on German highways. Trying to imagine what that will become when I paint it black :D :?: Paint as a cheaper replacement for a turbo charger :?:

This research paper was done back in 1995, the advances in making black blacker must mean that the difference is even more now!

What I told my friend is that in the Arizona sun the black absorbed more energy making the skin panels warmer. Some of that heat transferred to the surrounding air making it less dense, allowing the car to displace it easier at speed.

Well, it could happen that way.

I have a Silver Toyota Tundra pickup truck.
I have a black BMW.
The BMW is definitely faster.

There might be something to this 'black is faster' thing.

Or try this one :

throwing contest - a "black" Sigma 70-200 2.8 versus a "white" Canon 70-200 2.8. Without doubt I'd throw the Sigma the furthest  But maybe this has more to do with personal preference rather than airspeed, Cx value or the Arizona sun

Hey Tom...

How ironic. Close anyway.

I have a silver Dodge Dakota pickup truck.
I have a black Audi TT.

The TT is definitely faster.

I have a red Pontiac Montana
I have a black VW New Beetle

The Montana is faster (V6, you know :D )
But the Beetle is more fun.

Dan has a terrific website, this guy is VERY knowledgable. I enjoy his humor enough I actually donated to his site, I check it a couple times a week for new topics

http://www.dansdata.com/

He uses a Canon D60 for site photography

Read this Dan's Data Classic to get a sense of the guy's take on things:

You once had a red 10d which I presume, for speed purposes only, has now been re-painted in its original colour.

Back in "The Day" I used to drag race a bit with a 1969 Cadillac Hearse....

472CI V8, Heqaders, Dual exhaust,. the longest set of sidepipes ever installed on anything (exceedingly long wheel-base  ) dual plane intake manifold with dual quad Carter AFBs..

That car never lost a race.

And yet we had developed an alternate theary to your "Black is faster" (although it certainly does apply in hindsite)

My theory was this.

Air molecules are far more complex than we imagine them.. to the degree that they display real emotions

The effect was advantageous to the gargantuan black Hearse..

The Air molecules were literally "Frightened" out of the path of the california-king sized Hood and grill of the hearse.. they in fact ran in fear... thus making the collosal Hearse far more aero-dynamic than my opponents sportier rides! 8)

I'm not so sure about this color thing. I have a friend with a white Mustang and another one with a black Civic, and the Mustang is considerably faster. 8) He has done 147 mph in it and the Civic can only go 129 mph, and the Mustang is drastically quicker, too. :D

A white Mustang... well if it were Blue or something,. I would not beleive you,. but since it is white it is easily explained..

It is a Mustang L

Hehe, yeah I guess that's it. :D It has a red interior too, but not a stripe. ;) It does have a 5.0 Liter engine, though...

Proof statement - the new black 350D is faster than the silver Rebel. (see)

I'm pretty sure that a new 1D Mark II is going to be blacker than my 10D.

I'm sitting here straining my brain, and I can think of nothing to say in rebuttal. I cannot refute your premise, so apparently you have finally proven your point.

(I do seem to recall that my red 10D was as fast as my black one, though.)

I don't know...

My buddy [Josh] and I had twin Ford SVT Focus's. Mine was Sonic Blue and his was Pitch Black. We also had friends with a Red and Silver one.

My Blue was fastest, for some reason...then the Black, Red and Silver.

It sort of begs the question, "Why doesn't make the Mk IIs Sonic Blue?"

I agree completely. In fact I've know since last summer but wasn't going to say anything because I figured everyone would think I was nuts.

Last summer I replaced my biege computer with a black one and the difference in speed was unreal! I even went out and got a black monitor just to be sure.
My son, who built them both for me, says it has nothing to do with the color and tried explaining the faster speed using some funny number thingy but I know it's the color ... he can't fool the old man!

I have a Pewter Silverado Duramax and Black Corvette Z06. The Z is much much faster than the Dmax unless of course I tried to strap a 15,000 trailer to the Z. Maybe weight has something to do with it?:) The Z has hit 175 MPH (no trailer) and the Dmax has seen 95 mph (no trailer) where the rev limiter kicks in. So, I conclude Black is faster unless you have a heavy lens.

And my sigma white...

This will never end!
