Okay. Since a thread hasn't been started and it seems a shame to let the challenge die out just short of a year, I'll take the lead and pick FENCES as this weeks subject. Our time for shooting will be a bit shorter... but you still have 'til Sunday sundown to find a couple of shots for this week.

Thanks Beth. :D 'Fences' sounds intriguing. Hmmmmmmmmm......

Well - it was already Sunday here so I was thinking... where to go. Most of the places around here have hedges, not fences. Then I thought - what about my own back yard?

So off I went - on expedition. To explore and shoot like this, you need a companion who will totally support you and watch out for any nasty bitey critters while you scramble around at ground level

Got one of those:
(I am linking these because of their size - click on them for the bigger picture)

Fence #1 (or, what the dog saw):

Fence #2 (the mess that 'grows' between garage and fence):

enjoy!

 Great entries John! Cute little critter guard and guard's eye view. And I, too, have that mess 'tween the garage and fence! Just never thought of it as a subject. Good idea! :)

I 'inherited' it with the property, Beth. It's a rental so I only have another 6 months to put up with it.

I liked your pic - fence through a fence - good thinking there.

I only just found this thread (thanks to the PTON Aussie club) and I'm keen to play. I think I've missed this one though but will be in the next one.

In a couple hours I am going out to see if I can find some interesting fences and then I'll see if I can get them processed since my main pc is down at the moment (powersupply needs to be replaced, hopefully I get a replacement PSU on tuesday) so I would have to process the photos on my laptop with CS3 beta.

Thanks for keeping the challange going Beth.
After our 33 cm (12")of snow on Friday we had a beautiful Saturday, so went down to Old Montreal to see what Fences I could find.

Old Wooden Fence

Nice shot Beth ...

Ok, well nothing beautiful or even interesting for most people about this shot, but it fits the bill ;-)

Is interesting to me, and maybe a few others others who live near by, because when looked at in context of previous images it shows something of the passage of time in what is an ever changing area:

http://www.davidconroy.com/fence600.jpg

These are shots taken around this time last year: here (http://www.davidconroy.com/20060325200725__mg_0132.jpg) here (http://www.davidconroy.com/20060325200749__mg_0131.jpg)

I actually liked the white building that was there before (two have been knocked down but the second was dull!) It had some great conversion possibilities. Strictly a functional, industrial design but it somehow worked on the whole.

Today the weather was really nice, sunny, about 8C but not cold because of the sun so I went to the zoo to find my fences.

Many people had gotten the same idea to visit zoo on this nice day so when I got there about 2 hours after they opened there was a queue of at least 80-100 people waiting to buy tickets. I can just imagine how many there were at openening time. However since I have a season pass I could just wake right past them and go straigth ind

So what can be said about fences. Well fences are essential for safety in a zoo.

But they are also a pain in the butt for photography :(

Lots of good shots so far. John -- I like your doggie. I even clicked on the shot to see the big version. Your fences have a summery feel and reminded me that your Fall must be on its way the way our Spring is on its way. And what are those big, upright slabs in your third shot? 75D -- Nice comparison in your two fences. The first seems aimed at function and longevity (just look at those metal strips with their big bolts). The second seems almost frivolous in comparison with lots of unnecessary, but attractive decoration. I like both shots. Condyk -- Enjoyed looking at your Then and Now shots. Most interesting. Tommy -- Your posts are a nice comparison too with their different treatment of the same fence. It's amazing the way the fence can disappear!

Looks like you may have interrupted that cats dinner. He does seem to have his eye on you Tommy!

Conny, your neighborhood is really going through changes. I remember when you first mentioned the Tedesco (sp) store coming soon and it seems to be well on the way (last weeks re-takes). What will be going in at the spot you took that shot?

Nice fences there "D", looks cold. I like the contrast between the aged wooden fence and the pristine metal one.

Eh, Kiwi I like what the dog sees... Good looking doggy!

I like your double shot there Beth, and thanks for keeping this challenge alive!

Hope to get out today and take a fence shot, and then cheat a bit, I have a shot in mind that I won't be able to get to until Monday morning..

For this week's theme I headed to a place where fences abound: the National Park at Gettysburg, PA. The park has a variety of fences -- split rail, stone, picket fences around houses, and earthworks.

Split rail fence: (Took this yesterday, right before it started raining.)

Stone fence: (Took this today. Guess we had a change in the weather.)

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-8/812687/fence2.jpg

Then, coming home, I stopped at my favorite cemetary for this fence:

barbara that's fabulous!! I love the first one... here's my attempt. I realized that a good portion of the fences right now are buried... So, I have the tops of fences turned into black and white due to the lack of color I kept waiting and waiting for it to get better and nada....

Good one, Saravrose. I like that dark, brooding sky. Can it mean more snow? What is the curved line with inverted Vs near the right at the end of the snow field? It reminds me of an amusement park ride, and I know it can't be that. All I can come up with is an irrigation device. And that's a lot of snow!

My money is on an irrigator too!

Haven't posted here in a while...it's "Prom" season over here and when the friends know you'll shoot for free...well:(:(

Anyway...here's my sad effort...

I LOVE everyone's contributions this weekend.
Paul, the colors in yours are fantastic.
Sari, WOW, that's a lot of snow.
Beth, I love the perspective on yours. And the B&W is perfect.
John, the dog's eye view is great. :) Very creative.
75D, I love the texture on your first fence.
Condyk, there are lots of areas that look like that where i live too. Constant construction going on, many temp. fences. I hate when they knock down old buildings that I love though. :(
Tommy, Nice shots of beautiful cats. Ewwwwwww on their dinner.
Barb, I absolutely love your first fence. We have a few like that in our area, but I've never photographed one. I like it.

I really wanted to participate this weekend. I even had a particular fence in mind. It didn't happen though.
SO, here is a pitiful attempt at joining in the party. ;)

We went to the airport to watch the moonrise for the eclipse Saturday.
While we were patiently waiting, I took a few shots of aircraft.

Through the fence. :p

From the Worldwide sticky I gather that the original challenge was a scavenger hunt. Here are the original shots hunted in their home town:

"Here's was the list.
take a picture of a road... any road
take a picture of a fastfood spot
take a picture inside a gas station
take a picture of the name of your town
take a photo inside a store window"

We could use the original list or create a new one, like MeatyO's suggestion.

Now that could be very interesting: choose a road, open eyes afresh, shoot 3-5 things that catch your attention. Could be a person, something on the floor, a building, anything. The more 'personal' things like this have tended to be popular and interesting themes.

Yeah, I kinda like this too. :D What say you Sari??

We have already repeated the very first challenge once, so I think a variation on it would be better.

We've done it before but sized them a bit smaller than we do normally. I think I went about 500 on the long side.

BTW I like this idea also and warmer weather is finally headed our way. Hopefully, I'll get out this weekend and play too. Last weekend I wimped out cause I was sick of the cold and didn't want to bundle up again.

If you link them yes. If you attach them then unfortunately you have to limit to 2.

I would say not just 5 shots on a walk ... but 5 shots in a single road. The reason being that we are then forced to look for interesting things in a limited area and that will aid creativity.

If you host them on your own website you can imbed up to 8 (thats what I meant with linking) but if you upload to POTN server as attachments then you can only post 2.

I vote for your using your favorite 5. Let's say as you are walking along and a hawk flies over head, it may take a few exposures to get your most creative shot.
