Hey all,
I am trying to decide on a new camera, and as always I'm getting myself overwhelmed reading all the reviews and opinions...
To give you an idea of what I am looking for:

-I had 10D for a few years and recently sold all of my DSLR gear.
-I am looking at something smaller without detachable lenses.
-I still want to take artistic shots
-I would love Wide angle capabilities
-Would love a low f-stop for background blur
-I do alot of car shows now, so alot of close, wide angle type of shots for dramatic presentation.

I've been looking at the
G7
G6
A640
A710 IS

The G7 seems like a great camera, but it's hard not to take into consideration all of the negative views on removing the swivel screen, no Raw format etc..

But I have never used a swivel screen and never dove into RAW processing much...so I really would not miss those things.

I would love to get some opinions on cameras to consider, especially with what I plan to do with it.
Thanks all
Christopher

I think G7 would be OK, but you without that option: "-Would love a low f-stop for background blur ". Not really with any compact camera I think.

I'll have to echo this. If you hadn't mentioned wide angle, I think you'd be fine--with mid- to full-zoom, and positioning the camera close to the subject, you can get some great background blur, but it's going to be pretty hard to get much at full wide.

Except for certain folks with very specific needs and budgets, there are sacrifices involved in choosing your camera (at least right now). It sounds like you've already been down the DSLR road, so I'd say go with a G7, or find a used G6.

If u want WA go Olympus SP550. All the image qualities of the superzooms are so close as to be indistinguishable in the real world

I have Canon G2 and also G7. The G7 is highly recommended by me , get it , I am quite sure you will not regret buying it

Why is your shortlist all Canon ? I'm a believer too, but you're not buying into a system when you get a compact.
IMO wait to see if the new Noink P5000 is better matched to the Sony chip it shares with the G7.

I would check out some older high end models, you can often score some great deals. I just got my Canon G6 for 250 bucks (that's right :D), if you look around you might have similar luck. The Olympus SP-350 is also becoming really popular, they were originally 400 dollar cameras about a year ago and now can be found for 160 on ebay. Here's a new thread (http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1008&message=22499196&q=sp+350&qf=m) on dpreview where there's a lot of discussion and pictures from it. It's very small, has raw, and the IQ looks great. I'm thinking of getting one as a pocketable complement to my G6.

Get the G7.....OR spend 1000.00 more and go for the 30D.

Christopher ...

just a question ... what is your budget?

As to your requirements ...
- a more compact camera ... this I understand
- without detachable lenses ... what does this mean?
Does it mean 'It does not have to have detachable lenses' or 'I don't want a camera with detachable lenses' (for whatever reason)

Because, in case 1, I would suggest to look at the Canon 350D.
Really, your other requirements
- wide angle capabilits ... hard to meet on a compact
- low f-stop for DOF blur ... nearly impossible.

My fear is that if you are coming from a 10D, you might be a bit disappointed - even with a good compact camera.

Best regards,
Andy
