I think they are both evocative, but the B+W has a very somber feel...enjoyed them!

Nice picture with lots of possibilities. The main subject is a bit too central though in my opinion, rendering him a bit static. If you want him to be "walking away", perhaps cropping the pic with the stairs in the bottom and the person at the top will give the impression that he is trying to exit the frame. Or you can do it the other way around, with the person at the bottom of the frame, and the expanse of the railway tracks leading to the top, and he will be 'escaping' into the space beyond. I just wish the lamp post weren't there, as it complicates the pic.

I agree that the B/W version is more powerful and moody. The white thing at the foot of the person though has to go (is it some sort of plastic bag?) In black and white the eye is drawn to it. Welcome to the forum, and let's see more of your pics.

gary, you're obviously no stranger to photography. this is a beautiful shot.

i'd written a paragraph to suggest a lot of things, tighter crop, crop the the building on the right out as I felt it was irrelevant to the premise of your shot, and maybe play rule of thirds with your central character, juxtaposing his path along with the symbolic railway tracks. but the more I look at it as is, the more I really like it. where your character is placed, delivers a depth and distance from him - like he's already gone.

So I like first image look better than second image. Perhap need little bit more lighter tone on B/W. Look little bit too dark to me. Just my cent that all...Good work..

Interesting that your urban denizen can only descend and that a tall fence obstructs him from the one pathway out.

While I think you could increase the mid-tone range in the stairwell to better penetrate the shadows, I find the metaphor smashing and especially well reinforced by the savagely detailed tracks. You have a prescient eye.

I agree with the Lamp post and the Rubbish on the floor but hey that is the city life, the rubbish has to go though.
the Horizontal flip works alot better for me, it now shows me a path leading in to the Frame on the left and the railway as a quick exit out.
The other way felt uncomfortable, Quick entrance in via the Rail and slow exit out via footpath.
So where is this? I passed by some similar looking houses when on the train out of Sutton, heading into the City, back in April
