in most of the forums, when nikon comes up, people refer to both canon and nikon as fantastic manufacturers and producers of photography equipment. it realy has been settled, the difference between the two brands is feel, interface, and personal prefence. all of the other details are very miniscule in difference. ive noticed another thing, nikon's forums really suck, big time. nikonians.org makes people pay to get all of the priviledges that we have on our forums. How does this come together? our forum is Photography-on-the.net, not Canon-on-the.net. while we may be canon digital phtotgraphy forums, i think it would be so much better if there was a section dedicated to nikon equipment talk/rumors/etc. who do i need to talk to to see if there will ever be a possibilty of expanding our community to include other camera users? lets make something happen

There is a gap in the market ... but I wouldn't like to see other brands here because it will duffuse focus. I would like to see an 'empty' POTN made available for Nikon owners and interested people, like me, to 'populate'. At the end of the day people make forums, so there is no guarentee that the Nikon version, if it happened, would be any good. There is a kinda 'Western European' sensibility behind POTN IMO - pretty liberal and open but knows when to intervene in a war situation ;-) Get different people in running it and it may suck!

were not canon only and u can join up regardless what kit youve got (frankly dont care what u shoot with so long as your having fun) but the person to talk to would be petkal (think thats how you spell it) or another one of the senior mods.

i think if something like this was done it would be best doing it like the rumors section is done and have a direct link to the separate forum

Nikoncafe.com is a much better site than nikonians. Similar to POTN.

Wow, I thought there was no question left to ask on POTN that had not allready been asked a hundred times before,

..but I stand corrected!

I don't make this type of high level policy, so take what I say here with a grain of salt,..
But that said I may have a certain feel for how well this will go over,. so I'll offer my gut reaction.

We will certainly tolerate the less fortunate Noinks among us, and encourage them to join in the fun and share in the photo sections and discuss all manner of photography.. (we like Dogs too )

But you'll always have to settle for being the red headed step children that you are when on the Canon Digital Photography forums!

Sign up, post away, but by doing so you agree to be made fun of by the Superior Canon owners on the forum!

DISCLAIMER: This reply in no way reflects the policies of the administration of POTN. This reply is one daft lunatics opinion and that of about 91,000 other Canon owning POTN members, and no one else's.

Just sell the Nikon stuff and buy Canon stuff and you'll fit right in. Really, post here if you want, but please don't get offended if someone bashes Nikon here, just remember this is a mainly Canon forum. At the end of the day it's really the photographer that takes the pictures, not the camera. Welcome aboard, and have fun!

Nobody is perfect and we should always respect our fellow photographers, especially when they are nikon users and this is one instance when we should really sympathize with them... for them being nikon users of corse. The sooner we all realise that , the sooner we can all get along.

I often meet Nikonians in the field when I'm out shooting.

They seem quite reasonable and rational.

But mostly I see them only around high noon, whereas I'm out even after dark.;)

I was a pro photog in the 70s and an independent photo "artist" off and on since.

My specialty was shooting at low light level, even nightime by available light, I experimented with the fastest Nikon lens I could afford and the latest high speed films pushing them as far as they would go.

Now I own a Canon A620, I worked with it on a photo project until I reached its limits. I am hooked on digital and want the highest end Digital camera available.

I was going to go with the Nikon DX2 because I already have a set of Nikon zoom lenses. But I heard the MarkIII Canon outperforms the Nikon at low light levels...is this true?

you may want to start your own thread.. I can tell you that the new mark is going to be an awesome machine!! Unfortunately all of my camera knowledge is Canon based (i've never really bothered with noink).. But, you won't regret buying that camera.. folks are considering selling their children for that camera.. :p :p J/k... sorta..

Blainelll, do you have any of those scanned? I'd love to see some of your work..it sounds very interesting.

Also, the Canon 5D will outperform the D2X at low light...at half the price. The MkIII just has the ability to shoot ISO 6400. We'll find out if it's actually usable in a month or so.

Here is a link to some of my older pictures I was talking about.

click on "pics"
http://www.myspace.com/BlaineIII

Sorry the images are so small they are thumbnails of larger images that the internet archive for my old web site did not save.

The original scanned images are in storage 2000 miles away from me!

I am inclined to go with the Nikon Digital since I already have two Nikon zoom lens one AF and the other ED. However I miss the fixed focus Nikon 105 I've never seen a sharper lens.

Note: The black and white images are all shot with Tri-X processed with C-76, which is created by adding "Crone" to D-76 developer which effectively changes the ASA speed of T-X to 650, thereby "pulling" not pushing the image. This gives greater shadow detail and sharper image

Now I can do most of this digitally I never have to deal with those toxic stinky chemicals again.

What about using adaptors to attach Nikon Lens to Canon cameras? I know you lose the AF but I've done without that for many years, no great loss.

Feel free. But don't be surprized if, in many cases, you lose more than AF.

After some research I tend to agree with the 5D seems like an awsome camera, after 40 years of living with Nikon its hard to break up though...just the feel of those cameras heavy as a rock and solid as a tank...but then it's one of the reasons I have back problems today, carrying two cameras loaded with long lens and motor drives...

When I am out and about in this area I see a lot more Nikon users than Canon. It could have something to do with the fact that the ONLY camera store in the area is Nikon biased.

1. This site isn't run or sponsored by Canon.
2. Nikonians.org isn't run or sponsored by Nikon.
3. This is a Canon forum. Don't just look at the url. Look at the logo too.
4. Non-Canon users are welcome, but it's still Canon-oriented.
5. If this becomes a neither Canon-nor-Nikon-but-both forum, it will be just like dpreview.com and fredmiranda.com. And I personally wouldn't want that hell over here.

But there is nothing wrong about having a section set aside for users of other cameras. Its important if you are considering getting a Canon you want to be able to find out what features the Canon has that are better than what you are using. I want to see side by side images of the same subject taken by same lighting settings etc so I can compare.

Alright, look. We have a bazillion members. Threads cycle through the first page faster than I can hit "F5." Do we really need to add the entire Noink population to that? ;)

Some &*^%$#$% from Nikoians keeps sending me hate mail via the Canon vs Nikon threads. The great part is that I reccomend Nikon most of the time. Then he kept going about how I should have a link to a Lightroom thread at Nikonians since I'm a Canon shooter. Guess the world wide web isn't so wide when biases come into play.

But we've been told that we aren't welcome at Nikonians unless we own Nikon gear (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=283018). So how should we know about what's posted there? Gotta love their consistency . . .

I had a Nikon mount widey on my ex 350D and worked fine in MF. Adapters are cool. Lots of great lenses out there amongst the crap!

I am very liberal when it comes to camera gear and have no time for any Nikon v's Canon v's whoever BS. Even so, as things stand today I would get a 5D (nice bright focus screen) and Canon lenses because they are more diverse and the prices a tad better. Even so, I doubt you'll go wrong with Nikon. Have thought about it a few times myself. Seems you're at home here anyway ... so go buy and don't look back. I think you need to just buy and get on with it. Doesn't really matter which way you go IMO.
