Total Lunar Eclipse from the shores of Chicago
03 March 2007
The day did not hold much promise to observe this eclipse, much less capture it with the S3, but luck and patience held out to get a small handful of usable shots.

I did not have the luxury of staying by the camera thruout the event - as I had to operate a telescope and interact with the public - but I think the shots that did come out, (many did not) - are kinda cool...

None were taken thru the telescope as I was not prepared, too cold and it just wasn't convenient.

Why is your moon blue?
The Moon shots are have a bluish tint because of the Tungsten setting.
I like the totality Lunar shot you captured there...:)
Joe, are you the guy across from Olympia Park?
No, I'm a lifelong Chicago boy.
Who's in Olympia Park?

I see that a guy who lives next to Olympia Park (which is a park) in Edison Park Chicago built a dome on his house for his telescope. I thought it might of been you.

I have always wanted build an observatory on top of my inner city garage - to help fight the light pollution and have a comfy observing nest.
Perhaps one day, (or night).

That baby sure looks impressive but what i do not get is that it is right next to a city park which is lit up all night long , I do not know how the guy could see anything.
That rat bastard mayor has stolen our sky with all the freaking lights he is installing

Although the lakefront park is terribly lit with mercury vapor street lighting, over the lake it isn't too bad considering it's the city.
It's remarkable that even in the glow of the city skyline, we can still pick out star clusters, galaxies and nebulae with ease. Not as bright or detailed as in dark skies, but I'm thankful to be able to target them at all.
