View Full Version : Problem with Zoom Browser & A640 connection

I have installed the Canon Zoom Browser software and it gives me access to the pictures I already had on my hard drive. However I cannot get ZB to acquire pictures from the A640. A dialogue box appears telling me the camera is not connected.
The camera is in fact connected as I can acquire pics from it using either Roxio Suite or Adobe Photoshop. However I would prefer to acquire the pictures using the Canon Zoom Browser.
I have tried disconnecting all my USB devices, except the camera, deleteing and re-installing the ZB software - the whole lot - and still I cannot get the ZB to connect to the camera. Of course re-booting after disconnecting all the USB hardware and before re-installing the software yet again.
Is there a Registry switch that I can change so that ZB will recognise the A640? Or, if not that, then what do I need to do to get the ZB software to connect to the A640 camera.
Do please help as I've wasted days on this so far and I'm getting very frustrated with it all. Thanks in advance to all those who try to help me.
I will be away Mon/Tue/Wed/Thur - I'll catch up with the responses then or between now (Sunday) and tomorrow morning.

Before you pull all your hair out trying to figure it out do yourself a favor and buy a $10 USB 2.0 Card Reader. You won't regret it!
But if you need to connect it make sure the camera's transfer mode is on normal not the other mode PSP (I think those are the letters) and there is another Canon S/W that needs to be installed. I haven't used the Canon S/W for awhile now but it has to do with remote teather capturing. The Camera also needs to be turn on and set to view mode ( square w/ arrow iside)

OK, I've tried switching off my printers and my scanner - all to no effect.
There doesn't appear to be a Picture Transer Mode item on any of the menus. Are you sure there is such a switch in the A640? As I mentioned in the question I can already connect to the camera with other software so the camera is communicating but not with the ZB.
As for buying a card reader, I would only do so if I thought it came with its own software which worked totally independantly of everything else.

lostdoggy - I'm afraid that answer is too cryptic for me:

Do please explain. Thanks

I second that.
Zoombrowser is imho a dog.
I use the free FastStone viewer...much more useful

It means that a card reader doesn't require any software if you are using under Windows XP, just comes up as another drive C:\ or D:\ or E:\ or whatever is available.

I have the full printed manual for the A640 and pages 30 & 31 do not refer to anything relevant to my problem. I can't find anything in the manual that is even vaguely helpful. I must have missed something.
Interested in your comment about ZB and how useful a card reader is. I'll bear it in mind meanwhile I'd liek to get the ZB working as it's intended to work.
Any further ideas?

I'm in the process of downloading the FastStone viewer.
I now understand the point you're making about the card reader. Sounds an excellent option.

No, I don't see the camera as an item in 'My computer'. It's only visible in the ControlPanel/Scanners & Cameras.

With card reader attached via usb as soon as a media card in your case a SD card window in most case wil pop up a window asking you what you want to do with it. scroll down to folder and click open.
External Removable drive is any devic like external hard disk drive, flash/jump drive, media cards connect to a device (mp3/camera/reader) thru USB/firewire/externalSCSI/eSATA. XP will automatically recognize these device and install the apprpriate driver needed to read and write to them usually no other software(sw,s/w) needed.

I've looked for SD card readers on the internet and you're right they are very inexpensive. I think I'll get one as it does seem to be a useful alternative. However I would still like to get the ZoomBrowser to work correctly.

Graystar,
No, I don't have the Camera Window installed. It will not install - it has failed completely. Any idea how I get that installed? It's meant to install itself but it never gets to that bit.

LostDoggy,
I've read and re-read page 31 of the Basic Manual and it has not helped me at all. That's why I've come to this forum for help.
Graystar,
>You’ll have to do some research on the web.
That's why I've come here - as I've completely failed to find any help at all with this problem. I have a number of USB devices - 2 x printers, scanner, modem. I disconnected them all before attempting to re-installl the Canon software all over again. So far it did nothing to help.

Sometime you might have to uninstall n scanner and camera the existing canon 640 device before you can install Camera window. Make sure you uninstall any existing camerawindow s/w. ceckin device manager to maker sure 640 is no listed there as well (with camera attached and on set preview). Disconnect camera from PC and then try to installthe s/w when prompt to connect camera (w/ power off) connect and then turn power on (set to preview). PC will show that it have detected a new device and will propt to install let s/w handle that part don't click anything. Thi may or may not work. But worth a try.

Hope you enjoy it !
Its got a great full screen mode, easy and configurable zooming and the email resizing feature is excellent.
Try hovering mouse top sides and bottom of full screen pic for pop up menus.
Also right click has great menu.
Only shortcoming is the shooting info is a bit sparse
