I'll probably bring a cheap tripod (my "real" one is too darn heavy to carry around all day). Anyone who wants can use it.
I imagine others will have tripods available, too.
Unfortunately I cannot make the Chicago trip, but rumor has it (on another thread), you also go to the Bristol Faire sometime in summer?
I would love to hook up to that.

rumor has it (on another thread), you also go to the Bristol Faire sometime in summer?I am hoping to invade Bristol again. Their season is fairly short - around July 1 through Labor Day. Stay tuned for developments in a few months.
Here's a few threads from last year's POTN Faire Day.

Short? 9 weekends I believe that is the longest running faire that doesnt run year round.
I go every weekened there, it is like my second home during the summer.

Short? 9 weekends I believe that is the longest running faire that doesnt run year round.I meant short compared to, say, baseball season. ;)
Anyway, when we go there this year, you'll be expected to round up all your friends and put on a bodice & corset fashion show for us!

if you all let me know at least a week in advance im sure I could arrange 8-10 ladies and maybe a few guys and we could put on a "medevil fantasy fashion show"

I just got FULL confirmation that I will be there on Sunday the 22nd. At 6:23 am, my gear was loaded on "Brown's" truck for delivery. Rebel XTi (black), Sigma 17-70, Sigma 70-300, Sigma flash, Spare battery, 2 Sandisk Extreme III 2-Gig cards and UV and CPL filters for both lenses. I CANNOT wait.

Brrr! Hope we don't have to wear winter coats to the GTG.
This will be my first Chicago GTG. Do people bring a lot of gear or keep it simple? I think I'm more excited about meeting people than taking pictures.

Do people bring a lot of gear or keep it simple? From the preliminary itinerary, it looks like we'll be on our feet and walking a lot. It's mostly a question of how much payload you want to haul around all day.

I am probably going to be carrying most of my equipment. I think I'll bring a flash, but maybe not. I have a backpack though and I'd recommend it for carrying equpiment.

Are you staying at the Dub-ya?
Nah, I was gonna stay there but I chose the Palmer House Hilton instead. It's only a couple blocks from Millennium Park and a few blocks to Buckingham Fountain. That coupled with the fact that I got a great rate for two days made my choice easier ;)
I will be at the Dub for the meet though :D

I would love to join you guys but I'll be on a hiking trip on the Scenic Trail in Wisconsin that weekend. However, I would recommend looking into hotel rooms at the Sofitel. It's only 3-4 blocks from Millenium park and I got a really nice room for two for under $100. Here's a shot of the view from the hotel (millenium park is in the far right)

I ride the train home from work (retired, but working for my daughter part time until the 17th) and met a guy who sells tickets for the ferris wheel on Navy pier. He told me that if it even LOOKS like you are a professional photog, most of the low level employees will NOT let you ride. Until tax day, I am working long hours every day and have no time to call, as he suggested, and ask management to tell the employees that we are coming. I will watch this thread each night and if no one else has called by the 18th, I will make the call then. I suppose I will check Navy Pier's web site for a number.
I think meeting at the Planaterium for the sunrise is a great idea. There is a nice view of the skyline there and the Sun (if the weather cooperates) should light the buildings nicely.

...He told me that if it even LOOKS like you are a professional photog, most of the low level employees will NOT let you ride...
I'm confused. Why on earth would they care? If all the professional photographers in the midwest converged to ride the ferris wheel, and got spectacular shots posted everywhere, wouldn't that just be good press and exposure for them? I will never understand why some people/places have rules seemingly only for the sake of having rules.

It probably wouln't hurt if a few of us called...

Welcome Jones. I am not far from you. I live in Algonquin and my office is in Elgin at Rte 31 and 90. My son and I will be going together Sunday morning from Elgin. I too am a new 30D owner and absolutely love it. I had the original Rebel and still have the XT. The 30D is just amazing to me compared to the other cameras. You are going to have a great time with your new toy. What does your wife shoot? I'm trying to get my wife to interested, but you just can't force that.

Glad to hear you are enjoying your 30D I just cant wait to get mine and get using it. I have a few lens coming to give it a good workout.
My wife dont shoot but she likes to go along when I am going to be shooting, you are right about not pushing the issue. Gosh if she did like it and wanted her own gear that would mean it would cost me twice as much, I better be carfull there.
I hope I will be in town those days, I do some traveling for work and I never know when I will be out of town or not till just a couple days before I have to leave.
I am crossing my fingers that I will be in town.

I have never had anything but some P&S stuff and I wanted to really get something nice, THANK GOODNESS my wife is on board and ok with everything, she really is Great!
I really gave some thought to what I was going to buy ( for amature ) and hope I have most of the equipmet that I will need for quite some time to shoot things I am intrested in. I would like to get into shooting interiors and landscape stuff, I know there will be more things I will want but I can figire that out as I gain experiance and knowhow about this great adventure.

Chris,
That is Great ! I am just chomping at the bit here to get my stuff and get going.
What a great picture you did there also, I have seen/used a freinds 10-22 and it is WIDE even with the 1.6 crop with the 20D that he had.
I want to get the 580 EX II flash here also, I may be picking that up with in a week or so.
I need to get my stuff and get using it as my wife and I are going to ITALIA for 3 week on vacation, we will be leaving on May 1 and going to NY to stay for 4 days and then it is off to Milan, then Venice, over to Tuskano/Lavorno, get on the boat and head for Sicaly to spend our last week.
We will be traveling all over so I need to get a bunch of CF cards or figire out how to laptop with me to down load all the imagaes.
I hope I get a handle on the new equipment to take some half way decent pictures.

Jeff:
If you are planning on taking your laptop, then buy an external card reader from Best Buy or somewhere like that for 25-40 bucks. This will really download your pictures fast to the laptop. Another plus is that you can evaluate how you are doing every day after you get back to the hotel since the camera will be new to you. It would be terrible to get home and find out that you made the same mistake over and over again like leaving the ISO set at 1600 when you wanted to shoot outdoors. My wife and I are going to Sanibel Island mid may for our 25th and I plan on doing a lot of shooting while she is sleeping in.
I want to get the 580EX too but I have no idea how to use and external flash.
jonesjj3
10th of April 2007 (Tue), 22:02
Great sugjestion on the card reader, I dont want to shoot a bunch of picturs and have made the same mistake over and over. This trip will not be repeated any time soon so I am going to make every effort learn as much as I can before we go. Sanibel Island ought to be a Great time.
I have played with my freinds setup using 2 strobes for shooting interiors, or attempting to shoot interiors. It is Hard! Lots of experimenting, both on lightstands, one on slave other on cord to hotshoe.
Long, Short, Hard, Soft, bounce, no bounce, Wheeeww, having as much control over it seems to be the best bet. I dont want to be lugging around lots of big lighting which is probobly the best way to do it so the external flashes are what I am looking in to.
Would be nice to have some sugjestions on some other ideas that are very portable and compact for lighting interiors, I will have to post that in one of the other forums here like the lighting forum Hmmmm Yea.

It may not be as good as a laptop, but I used an Archos Gmini 120 when on vacation in Alaska. It had a CF slot on the device so I downloaded the car every night and started fresh every morning. Charged batteries overnight, too. The 120 doesn't have a viewer, so it's purely storage, but the Gmini 400 has a viewer to it now. They might be more expensive than the other storage devices, but it will also play mp3 and video. The 400 may not have a CF slot.

I just stumbled upon this thread and would really like to join in the festivities. Count me in for Saturday night at the W and at least the early stuff on Sunday. Unfortunately, the motorcycle club that I belong to is having it's annual ride to Starved Rock on Sunday. It's a tough choice, but I think I'd rather stay in town and meet some fellow POTN members.
Also, if anyone is interested in getting some indoor architectural shots, the Chicago cultural center is across the street from Millenium park and has some very impressive interiors including two large glass domes. It's open from 10 - 6 on Sundays.
See you there.

I too may actually join this crowd. My only issue at this point is I am shooting the Girls Chicago Showcase hockey tournament, starting Thursday afternoon.
I might have to be dragged around in a box because I will be so exhausted.
If I can swing it I might be another body to count on attending.

It depends. You could use a super-wide angle and get lots of things going on. Or you could probably use a 200mm lens to get close into the sun. A mid range focal length will do a bit of both.
Are you looking only at Canon or will 3rd parties work too?

I think they might have changed it. Here's what I see when I check NOAA (http://www.crh.noaa.gov/forecast/MapClick.php?CityName=Chicago&state=IL&site=LOT)
Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 67.
Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 50.

Sunday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a low around 54.

so is there any plan to make a "responsible" party's phone available for any late-comers, or do we just start hiking around Chi-town looking for you? I plan on meeting at the bean at 9:00am, but others may not make it there at just the right time.
Good Idea, maybe Phil since we are meeting at his hotel Sat. night or if some arent going to the Sat. night but are going to the Sun. Bean, if you PM me I will give you my cell # (I have a room at the Palmer House for Sat and Sun so I will be there)

Good question. If there are people wanting to shoot night skyline shots we might want to get together a little earlier than we would under "normal" circumstances.
I'll start the bidding at 5:30 PM and leave it open to discussion.

No problem give your son a hug of gratitude for me. USMC or Navy?

It's pretty informal. We're planning on meeting for drinks at the "W" hotel at 172 W Adams St. I'm proposing 5:30 PM, but it's open to discussion if anyone prefers an earlier or later time.
I hope a lot of people can make it. It will be fun to meet everyone.

5:30 sounds good. The sun goes down around 7:30 so we will have a chance to chat for a while before we shoot the night skyline shots.

I thought the plan was to meet at the Planetarium for sunrise. My son and I were planning on being there between 5:30-5:45 to get set up before the sun rises at 6:01 am. It was my understanding that we would then wander over to the bean to meet everyone else at 9:00 am. Would give some time to catch a bite to eat for those that get up early. There is a Corner Bakery over by the Palmer House that is open early.

It sounds like the plans for Saturday night are pretty well set but the early morning sunrise is not. I pm'd drparker to ask him to change the overview from "meeting for sunrise at the lake" to meeting for sunrise at the planetarium. I'm really getting excited about meeting everyone and am sorry that doc parker won't be able to join us. If I had my pick I would certainly opt for seeing my son in San Diego if I had the chance.
I'm going to volunteer to be a point person for the early morning shoot and the meet up at the bean. I don't have any plans for how long I will be downtown but I know that I will at least be there for the whole morning. For anyone that isn't sure how to get there or after showing up can't find anybody I'm going to leave my cell number here. 224-629-6408

As an aside, I may bring some extra gear with me that I am planning on selling on the buy and sell forum here in the next few weeks. Namely, I will be selling my Sigma 24-70 2.8 -$350.00, XT with kit lens and BG-E3 grip - $500.00
Anyone else interested in trading or selling during our get together? It would be nice to be able to try before you buy.

I just thought about something. Shouldnt we have some sort of plan as to where we will be shooting Sunday? I mean I know were going to meet at the Bean and take some shots there and around the park, but then what? Do we have any other locations planned? There were some suggestions in this thread but so far nothing is set.
The Sears Tower was mentioned also the Art Institute, Navy Pier, Museum Campus (Soider Field, Field Museum, Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium) and Buckinham Fountain (Grant Park)
If I missed any please let me know.
No need to worry I already have a plan B (in case of weather)

I agree. We should have a plan in place because that is a lot of ground to cover, especially if we're all with gear. If we are going to be at the Planetarium, then Grant Park and then the Pier maybe we need to get our own trolley (or maybe two...)

ok, looks good to me, I will be there at 5:00 PM on Saturday, I will try to get Sunday for the sunrise, but I can't promise nothing since my time of sleeping is at 2:00 AM every day. Is there any other way to communicate each other once all this start? I have my BB but if any one is interested and lost, PM me and I can give you my cell number. I live 15 minutes from downtown but I will drive and park my car at the milleniumpark.
Thanks!

With so many possibilities, I offer this thought for Sunday.
We don't need to stay together in one massive group like a blob of POTN jelly all day long.
We could spend a little time at Millenium Park, discuss some options, agree on a time/place for lunch, then break into smaller groups to explore different sights.
Then we would reconverge at the prearranged lunch spot, eat, chimp each other's pictures, and repeat the process.
I just hope someone brings a good, detailed map of the immediate area. :D

There is plenty parking on the Millenium Park, they have it on the basement, plenty of it, and I believe thats the centralized location for us to meet, there is also a small restaurant right on the park for those who want to take a drink and wait for the others to arrive. For sure I will be there before 5:00 PM so I have some more time to take pictures. Then I will hit to the W hotel :)

Hey there Chicago.............How often do you guys/gals meet up? I used to live there for a few years in the early 90's before that was in East Chicago, IN. I still head out there a few times a year and would like to meet up with you all if it worked out that way.
Anyhow, I'll follow your threads from time to time and see what happens.
