Ok,this may sound like an odd question but i've read things such as "has lately been giving error messages" or "recently the lens decided not to work with the body"
The thing is i just can't remember what context i heard such comments (maybe the lens just died alltogether)
So can anyone say for sure? Do sigma lenses lose compatabillity gradually....?

Or if i buy an old sigma lens and it works on my camera (which i intend keeping for a loooong time),will it keep working?

Yes, it should (99.99% chance) continue to work with that camera. But if the "400D" comes out and you buy one of those, all bets are off. Your Sigma may or may not work. Sigma may or may not be able to re-chip the lens for the new camera.

That are almost no guarantees in life other than death and taxes.
