I am in the process of getting a 70-200 f/2.8L IS and was wondering if people shoot handheld with the tripod collar on or off the lens?

If I'm not using a tripod I won't have it attached. The gear is heavy enough as it is... :D

i do, i'm not sure exactly why but when i take it off it didn't feel right - i like to pop my little finger through and wedge it there sometimes

hehe

if I'm using the 70-200 then no, as I very very rarely use that on a monopod

the 120-300....if I use that handheld then it stays on, I usually grab hold of the lens hood!

70-200 F4 L (non IS) - Yes I do - I feel it just give me a little more hand holding ability.

If it counts for sigma 70-200 2.8 which is lighter, I don't take mine off at all. It's only 50 grams or so.

I keep mine on. I suppose I could take it off, but then I'll have one more thing to keep up with and not lose. :)

Same here. It stays on the lens or it's just one more thing that I have to keep track of.

When I’m not using tripod, I take the ring off.
I don’t like that thing when I’m shooting hand held, it’s always in the wrong spot..

Mine stays on almost all the time. I may rotate it out of the normal position when working strictly handheld, but seldom actually remove it.

If I took it off, there would be something else loose in the camera bag which would get in the way when inserting lenses into the bag.

Mine stays on all the time (80-200L). I also hold it like the lady in that picture...ring at the 6. It's actually very nice to hold it by the tripod foot and have the fingers free to manipulate the zoom ring. Very comfy.

I keep mine on but I have it at 12 O'clock, when I have it around the bottom it seems to interfere with my zooming.

If I am not taking the tripod, than I leave it at home. If I do have the tripod, but am handholding, than I have the foot rotated to 12 O'Clock high.

I don't have a need to take it off.

Same here with the 100-400 I rotate it to the 12 o'clock position, which is also how I store it. It makes a nice little well balance handle to pull the camera out of my bag with the lens mounted.

I just leave it on.

I do because it just seems to give me more control. One day I almost dropped my lens and fortunately was able to snag it by the collar.

I leave mine on. It rests comfortably in my left hand as I zoom.

stevefossimages

I leave mine on regardless of the lens, and when shooting it's always in the 6 o'clock position. When shooting sports or wildlife, I may need to pop on a monopod at a moment's notice, and I can't take the time to dick around with the tripod collar when time is of the essence. There have been instances in low light where that extra few seconds would have cost me strong images. Why risk it?

Mine stays on the Ex 100-300 all the time.

On the 80-200L I take it off, on the 70-200L it stays on, since you have to remove the lens from the camera to attach or remove it.

how do you remove it?

I leave mine on at the 6 O'clock position. tend to hold it the same as the girl in Ed's picture.

René Damkot

Rotate it untill the red dot on the collar is at the same position as the red dot on the lens. Then you can slide it off.

On the Sigma, I left it on all the time as it doesn't require removing the lens to take it off.

On the Canon, I leave it off but I will probably put it on as I use it as a palm rest just like that girl in Ed's pic.

I leave my mount (EX 100-300) on my monopod.

I like to leave mine on, and I've got an RRS plate on it, too. If I absolutely know I'll be hand-holding all day, sometimes I'll leave it at home. But that's rare - I too keep it at 6 o'clock and tuck in a finger or two. Plus it provides another "base" if I find something on which I can rest the cam/lens.

I leave it on, it doesn't bother me, I use it for handling too. Also, I think if I were to keep taking it on and off, I will end up scratching the lens body.

anyone else have a problem with zooming a 70-200 2.8 when it's on a monopod? the gap between the barrel and the foot is awfully small. or i have a big thumb...

René Damkot

I usually have mine off b/c I never use a tripod. But after reading this thread I put it back on mainly to use it as something to hold on to.

I can see that working. Doesn't add too much more weight to the already heavy thing, so I think I'll leave it on.

BTW, I just got the Canon 2x TC MkII, so I got that thing on with the 70-200 f2.8 IS and the freakin' big hood. I look at the mirror and think "Look at that freak with that freaky thing..."

So much for covert shooting...

I have my hand on top of the lens, so: No.

Ditto the second one - I put my hand on top of the lens. The gentle pressure helps keep the monopod securely on the ground, and makes it very easy to focus.

I keep it on. Does anyone else find it handy to carry with the tripod mount bit between your fingers and your arm down by your side?

The 70-200 is often hung on the shoulder as a second camera, so it is definitely off (the collar that is, as it can get caught on things.

I leave the ring on my 100-400 all the time. When I'm shooting birds, I'll sometime pop the camera and lens off the tripod and shoot handheld for in-flight shots, then I'll put it back on the tripod again. When I'm shooting handheld, I hold it like the woman pictured...

Andy Bright

I only shoot the 300/2.8 handheld or on a beanbag, so tripod foot is totally redundant, no reason to keep it on... it's in it's case (along with canon's strap) in the attic, and it will stay there for a long time ;)
