My Day At The Butterfly Place

It was a very cloudy and dark day, so I thought that I'd visit the local butterfly house. It was quite dark inside, so everything was flash and ISO 800. I'd llike to visit on a brighter day, but those brighter days mean that I'd rather be outside... Either way, butterflies are pretty neat.

I've gone through 2 butterfly books and can't identify a single one of these. If anyone can hazard a guess at any, please do.

#1 looks like "The Paper Kite" if not then something from the Idea leuconoe family

#3 Looks like "Great Mormon" Papilio memnon although on my sheet its wings have a blue tint.

#6 is called "Clipper" Parthenos sylvia

Not sure on the rest...

I think #1 is my pick out of the 6. What lens did you use?

Thanks for the IDs. Neither of my books had any of them under any of the names. No wonder I couldn't find them!

Do you have a recommendation on a good Butterfly ID book? I've got "Butterflies Through Binoculars: The East" and another little guide they had at the place. I'm guessing that none of the ones shown are native to the east.

As to lenses, the first 5 are the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L with a 20mm extension tube. The last is a Sigma 105mm f/2.8 Macro.

As to the blue tint, it probably does have a blue tint. My flash was a little too harsh (even at -2 FEC), and I noticed some color changes on a few shots of Zebras - their yellow bands are white in the photos. :( The lighting was a mix of cloudiness through the atrium, a few lights they had, and the flash. Maybe I could have fixed them in Capture1, but I'm never sure enough of the original color to play with it.

Yep, double-checking my book that is a Red Admiral. I may have been off by the orange in the picture - I don't remember it being red but I have noticed some other color shifts in these pics. Next time I'm going with a white card.

I don't remember it being red but I have noticed some other color shifts in these pics.
The colors in yours look about right. I've never seen a red one in Michigan.

Next time I'm going with a white card.
On the other hand, I'm a big fan of Custom WB!

I was really tempted to call them
#1 Justa black and white butterfly
#2 Justa brown and brown butterfly
but resisted the temptation. Really great shots. There is a butterfly "show" (live) in Montreal for the next few weeks. Supposed to be visiting next weekend. Definately taking the camera.

I'm not any good at naming butterflies. You'll notice that Ian is an expert in just about anything with wings. :roll:

There's some noise, just not a lot. I didn't bother running these through Neat Image because it's just not too bad at all.

I think Ian got that from me. :) At least there was one picture a while ago that I called "Just a bird" because I didn't know what it was. (37 years in the city allow you to identify pigeons and that's about it.) Turns out it was a swallow. I caught some good-natured flack on that one, so now I at least attempt to find out the names of things.

However, when all else fails, damn near everything falls into the "Justa" family of wildlife. :wink:
