Are you sure you mean the 75-300 and not the 70-300 ? The 70-300mm is newer and is supposed to be a lot better. I don't think the 75-300 is sold much anymore, unless you are buying used. And the Tamron 18-200 is 3.5-6.3. I have that one and it is very versitile, and not too bad of quality, although there is a new 18-250mm that just came out for a little bit more money. The zoom ranges are completely different. The Tamron is an all-in-one kind of lens that goes from wide angle to telephoto. The Canon is telephoto with a bit more range than the Tamron plus image stabilization is a real plus too.
If you want to be able to shoot wide all in one lens, you should go for the Tamron. Although the image stabilization on the Canon also makes it very attractive.

I'll add another suggestion - how about the Sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro, one of the best budget telephoto zooms on he market. I have one and it's a cracker :)

I would only recommend 18-200 if you have a set of fast prime lenses and flash to back it up.
Otherwise.. you are REALLY limiting yourself.
Ask yourself where you will be shooting the most..
Will it be indoor or outdoor?

Have you considered the Tamron 28-300 f3.5-6.3..Macro ??
I picked one up a few months ago, and while it's not as sharp as my primes, it's a very capable package at its size and weight...I shot a spring training game yesterday, mostly all at 300mm, and got some very sharp and useable results...and....it's not very expensive for what it does!!..It has become my main "walk around" lens on my 20D.....In fact I only carry it, and my Tokina 12-24 in my kit most of the time......If I can't get the shot with either of those, fuggeddaboutit!!;););)

It really depends on what you want to shoot.
75-300 is very long on the 400D - if you shoot indoors at all, it will be too long in my opinion (and i had one and sold it)
18-200 - great range on the 400D, but as others have said, not a great lens BUT if you are looking for an all-in-one lens for learning on it's a good choice, you'll find however that you will want to use flash quite a bit because of it's apertures. - I have the Tokina 24-200 and it's the same basic concept.
I have the Tamron 28-300 as well (bought it for my wife) and I don't care for it unless I'm outdoors and don't want to stop and change lenses.
As many people on this forum have pointed out many times - you buy an SLR for a reason - to be able to change lenses. My recommendation for a good starter lens (from what I've read, not personal experience) would be the Sigma 17-70. Longer range than any of the 17 or 18-50/55's and pretty good price/performance ratio.
