Challenge #61 - Still life

This week's challenge will be about Still lifes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Still_life). Set up a few objects on a table/counter top, well, any surface you can find and see fit and arrange them at your taste. You can use totally unrelated objects, but think about the composition. ;) Don't forget about the background and lighting; don't be afraid to build a mini-studio on your kitchen table (desk lamps, backdrop...) . My main judging points will be about overall photo appeal, technique and subject.

Have fun!

-Jeece

I am not a doctor but trying to decide what to submit, found the kids playing with an old stethoscope. My wife was making cookies so she helped me to set up some other items as well. The camera was on a tripod and PP was done on Picasa, converted to B&W and played with a contrast just a tiny bit.

I know I'm late, but the competition doesn't seem to be closed yet, so I'll be a bit cheeky...

I have lost the exif data as I can't find the original anywhere and had to download it from my flickr account. I'd guess at f/2.8 for 1/125 or something similar. I remember it was hand-held and I put a white sheet of paper under the left of the penguin to hide the clutter on the desk.

Thank you Jeece for an excellent subject. Congrats to the winners also
Thank you Cindi! I actually didn't have to prop those items at all. That's the way I found them in an old barn I was in. Looked like they hadn't been moved in a lot of years.
EddS......original as always. :)

Some absolutely stunning photos this time - great job by all.

I did not have time to compose any pictures for this, so I just pulled one out of the files. I appreciate the "pun" mention. Actually, I thought mine was "dead" on!

A personal favorite was spur's.

A few bulk comments:

Graystar: Good subject, plus your photo is quite sharp and well lit. I loved the textures and the materials choosen. But, I thought it lacked some composition, I mean the cropping was too tight for me. Maybe showing the whole handle would have helped?

Hulo: Impressive 1st post! Photo is very great, well done, and without a tripod too. Far from a bad execution, but I thought it fit less the topic. Keep on sharing those nice shots!

ashmicek: The wooden texture is amazing. I think another angle could give a more attractive look to the same scene.

O_T: Your entry looked a little flat to me, it just lacks some contrasts. Maybe the color used didn't help too.

dyle: Overall great technique (light, DOF, colors...) and good choice of objects. That watch sure looks good too - my kind.

Edd S: I like when people "stretch" the rules and play with words. Interesting photo, especially the cross shadow on the small stone in the lower right corner.

teekay: I forgot your photo in the Honorable mentions category. I loved the black background and the backlight. Maybe a fill flash, or some lighting to wake up the right part would have helped? The texture on the bottom part is amazing!

stanley_pope: How did you achieve to balance those bottles? I assume you didn't empty them just prior to the shooting session. ;)

Paul B: Good idea, and it turned out well. I would have like to see more of the glasses.

snowrdr: Very good choice! The towel kept bugging me, but otherwise I was pleased with the shot. The goods in question were really the focus of the photo. Good effort you put here.

mommytomjm: The photo wasn't large enough (800 pixels rule) but the idea is superb!

spur: ohhh, colors!:) Good setup and technique.

Don't feel bad for my (lack of) comments, especially if I speak of your subject. It's not easy to host a challenge, and not always easy to participate and please the judge. After all, we judge depending of our interpretation of the topic, and that's often open to debate. Also, about the comments, sorry if it sound negative sometimes... But I only told what I didn't like (or liked the most) - the rest was at least OK, I just didn't write up the whole thing. Those were what I thought as standing out in both the extremes. ;)

Again, thank you very much for participating!

Thanks for the third place Jeece. I thought it would be between dyle and Dave for first. They were by far the best to my taste. Great shots.

Hey, thanks for the vote of confidence, Jeece!

Loved spur's and greystar's pics. Now, to think of a topic...I'll post one hopefully in the next few minutes.
