I was looking into getting a smartphone (since I can get one for about $100 right now). Does anyone know if you can run normal PDA software on the Pocket PC software? The reason I'm asking is, I'd definately buy one if I could get a DOF calculator on it, but if not...ehhh

If by normal PDA software you mean like Palm OS, you can't use that on Pocket PC. You can get dof calculators for Pocket Pc though I have seen them around just can't remember where otherwise I would give you a link. Google it :)

There are two different OS's. Smartphones are different from PDA phones. One way to kind of look at it is that smartphones are phones that have some extra features added, and yes you can add more programs but not as many as PDA phones. PDA phones are esssentially a PDA with a phone application on them. I used a few smartphones and now am on my second PDA phone and will be upgrading again. I do not know of any DOF calculator as I've never even though about putting photo related sofware on it.

MoDaCo would be the place to find it though: http://www.modaco.com/index.php?

using a blackberry now waiting for the iphone.

Someone (curtis?) made a excel file that you could load.

Personally that would take way way way too much time for my style shooting, and I suggest you learn the hyperfocal distance rule and you'll be way better off and less dependant on charts.

That works pretty well on my Nokia 6265 ;)

I'm a Nokia fanboy. Their phones have done wonderfully for me. But everyone has their own taste

I'm using a iMate JasJam PDA phone. I've got a DoF prog on in from here.

Don't forget that the PDA phones running Windows Mobile 5 will have a mobile version of excel on them. You can use this to use/look at some of the spread sheet based DoF tools about. Mine you pocket excel isn't real user friendly on a PDA. Size matter.

I use a palm Treo 650. Been using it for almost 2 years now. I want to upgrade. I would get the iphone, but with the money i would spend the iphone i can get some glass ( and its cingular only, im with verizon ) the iphone is supposed to be quoted at $599 with a 2 year contract which is a bit steep for a phone.

the iphone is also an ipod (don't have at the moment) wifi phone (saves $29.99 from my cell bill for blackberry internet/messaging, and will have a reduced price on your service as they can't take any money away from the cost of the phone per Apple. So you save 29+? per moneth, gain a widescreen ipod and get a pretty slick phone. Not a bad deal
