I am looking for a background stand that is easy to set up, and easy to transport. I want to be able to take it to different places to set it up so I want it to be light, but I also want it to be sturdy, and be able to hold a 10x20 muslin. What do you suggest for a brand. Also where do you get your muslins, there are so many out there, and such a wide price range. I don't want stuff that is no good, but I also don't want to get ripped off.
Thanks for any help you can offer,
Heather

I have background stands from here: http://www.amvona.com/v7/shop/?page=shop/category&category_id=a4c84469eccbfcedff404a861ad6e3fb
Reasonable prices, fair service. They have an eBay presence here: http://stores.ebay.com/amvona-com_W0QQcolZ2QQdirZQ2d1QQftidZ2QQsclZ2QQtZkm
I've bought from both and not been disappointed.

I got the impact background support system from B&H. Awesome quality.

As for muslins, I was always a Botero fan. However, I ordered a 10x24' in both black and white from Backdrop Alley, available on B&H, and they are fantastic quality. Grommets, rod pocket, nice and thick, and a nice strong hem.

I've got the Giottos Background Support System and a painted muslin backdrop from Allen's Cameras. You can find info here at Adorama. http://www.adorama.com/GTBSS.html
I really like the air shock feature of the stands; if you put pressure on them they compress; you aren't going to squish fingers or overstress the compression fittings if someone pulls on the baskdrop.

I have a JTL kit with a travel bag that's great. There's some space left in the bag for an umbrella or small stand and I can easily carry two light stands on top of the bag, under the velcro handle strap.

I also like the Adorama muslins, there cheap and the 3 or 4" hem makes it very easy to setup on the stands.
Personally, I wish someone would come out with laminated background papers since they would lay much better than muslin.
However, if you plan to make a true portable kit, make sure to include plenty of painters tape to secure and flatten the muslin out on the floor.
