Hello

First time doing this kind of shoot. I normally shoot Landscape and decided to play around with people photography. Please tell me what you think I need to improve on. Please tell me which B&W you like better also.

I think the shot itself is good not sure I like the mascara running it would have worked with tear or a different facial expression she doesn't look mad nor sad ??? I like the second BW conversion better then the last. Please take my 2 cents with a grain of salt I'm a noobie! ;)

the crying thing doesn't do it for me- she'd look better with "normal" makeup.

her eyes are made to look like they were crying but her face doesn't; therefore, I think it's a bit of a mismatch. The clarity is great but the one, wayward, lock of hair sweeping across pretty much her entire face is a bit distracting. I like the B&W and would also like to see the pic with a selective colour of just the eyes to give them a little more pop.

Good lighting. But other than that, I dont get it. Is she really supposed to be crying, is the mascuara supposed to have been running down her face? If so then it did not do the job. Tears are pretty much invisible, the mascara would be running with the tear not smudged on underneath the eyes. Like I said before, lighting is good, Makeup artist as well as composition at the best are incomplete to tell us a story. If this is not the story then explain what the purpose is?

Good lighting. The mascara doesn't do it for me either i'm afraid. I think if her facial expression was a sad one then it would have worked.

Yes she was suppose to be crying. Didn't achieve that part. She wouldn't stop laughing all day. So I did the best I could. I was too worried about keeping eyes in focus and if I had enough light in the bathroom, so I missed the hair being in her face during the shoot. I learned a lot my first real one on one shoot.

Thanks to everyone who has replied.

Keep it coming I'm learning a lot here.

I like the whole concept to this picture but i think the mascara needs to look real.

Try getting the model to cut an onion...I know its extreme but you will a real result.

I thought of that and even mentioned some gunk they used on America's next top model. Didn't have a onion and couldn't remember the name of the gunk they used. Thanks for the idea. And I agree I failed at the crying part of the picture.

Thanks for the reply

Light is good, hair in face is distracting. Color does it more for me. She has incredible eyes - they don't need all that stuff....she is a pretty lady. Would love to see one of her smiling.

yes more of her smiling the crying shot does not work for me too much eye make-up looks caked on i think she would look much better happy or a sexy shot

Oh she's cute... I think she needs a make-up lesson so I gave her a digital one.. LOL! I know you were going for a look here but I'm always practicing on my PP skills and I really wanted to see how she looks without black eyes... :) Hope you like it and you don't mind the edit.

I also bumped up the levels and contrast to pop the background a bit.. removed the red from her eyes, and burned them to make the color pop. Oh and I painted her lips with a soft brush to soften the dark lip color a bit... FInally sharpened for web, and here it is... :)

I can remove this if you prefer.. just let me know. :)

One more... high contrast just for fun... It's really a great shot.. exposed nicely so you can do lots of playing with it.... :)

last one.... Reduced pinks as another posted commented, and bumped levels again... Duplicated the layer and bumped levels really high to blow out the background... then erased the girl so the orginal would come back through. Reduced overall satuation, and again in the red channel. Bumped cyan to bring out her eyes, and added a white fill layer with "soft light" as the blending mode (or layer style).. reduced opacity to around 45 I think. I t hink I erased the eyes off the fill layer though.

Oh and I like the hair in the face... looks cute to me. :)

Yes I could have removed the eye make up but not what we were going for. We were going for the crying look and a troubled look. Failed at it. But not sure I agree with crying and make up always running down the side of the face. But I would have came better off in a picture.

Thank you for the comments. I've learned so much from all of you.

one more quick comment, i think it's a good picture, but it sort of lacks composition, doesn't follow the rule of thirds. other than that, it looks good

pretty girl. Would like to see her in a serious glamour-ish setting. Don't like the fake mascara, either. Kind of looks like a mix between one of the Olsen twins and Alice Cooper. But a very pretty girl.
