 It has happened  sad  but true, my faithful G1 bit the dust last night while I was out shooting. I took some shots in the early evening for about an hour and a half. Went home and took off to my g/f place, stopped to take a few shots, turned the camera to the off position and the DAMN lens didn't close  . Immediately I knew what was wrong, the fuse has blown or so I believe.
I have read as many topics on this subject as I could find here and have tried all of them except disassembling it myself.
Wondering if there have been any new found "cures" for such problems as the G1 is so old and I'm sure someone has fiddled around with this POS problem many times before.
Would have posted on the Dead G1's topic but wanted quick responses before I send it to Canon for an estimate.
:) Thank you for any responses and all replies are welcome :)

Why not upgrade?

An upgrade is definately an option, but as you may know the G1 has great IR capabilities which I have yet to take advantage of, which is also the reason I got the G1.
Thanks for the suggestion, Anyone know where I can find a G2 or G3 for really cheap? ...besides Ebay.

God, if there was ever an excuse to convince the wife you have to get a new camera, this is it! Go get a Pro1 or digital Rebel.

I got a referb G2 December of 2002 and its still shootin strong!
I got it from a friend who works for Canon for $500 with a warranty, extra battery and leather case ... back then they were selling on ebay and such for around $800 used just for the camera...

It's a perfect opportunity to get a Digital Rebel.

Idoc,
I just repaired my G1 - replaced the fuse. I disassembled it, checked the fuse (it was blown), ordered the fuse ($6.50 CAD incl. shipping), received the fuse 2 days later, removed/replaced fuse, and assembled camera back together. The tricky part was soldering the fuse to the board. The fuse is extremely small and an ordinary soldering gun will not work well. I had to grind the tip of the gun to a fine point to be able to fit the gun between the fuse and a microchip next to it. Also if anyone attempts to do this, record and label where all the screws go and the order you removed everything. Another person posted digital pictures of his camera when he replaced the fuse during all the steps, and this was very helpful during my "operation". Many thanks to him.

msvadi & twl845:
Believe me if I had the money I would have the DRebel in a heartbeat. But unfortunately finances will not allow for such a joyful day, so I think I'm going for a G3, thought about a G5 but keep hearing all these bad things about it and the G3 seems to be just as good and faster since it is 1 MP less.

Thanks for responding, just saw your recent post on the dead G1's and replied there, if you have any steps to follow please post them or PM me later with more details. My only concern is the soldering. My g/f does it on jewelry she makes but I would be so worried doing that to a camera, one slip is all it takes.
