March 31 - Urban photography in Seattle
Time - 10AM
Location - Quest Field Parking Lot
alternatively 9:30am at MI Pres
We'll be doing some urban photography in Seattle, where ever we want to go. Pike Place, Pioneer Square, Iternational District, the Waterfront, Science Center, Space Needle, Freemont, Queen Anne, Gas Works . . . Where ever you want to go!
Here's my suggestion. Meet on MI and carpool and/or meet at Quest Field parking Lot
The reason why I suggest here is that its easy to find (stadiums are hard to miss), its relatively safe (my brother manages one of the bars next door) and that its convenient for where ever people want to go. Its blocks from the ITL district, pioneer square and the water front. Theres trolleys at the water front for those that want to do Pike Place. In the ITL district you can get a main line bus (ride free in downtown area) towards the space needle.
For those coming from the Eastside or that don't want to deal with parking, lets carpool.
Mercer Island Presbytarian parking lot (also a park and ride), 30 seconds off the freeway, easy to find, and 5 minutes from downtown Seattle.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v721/viperx27/map1.jpg
For those that want to meet in Seattle, I suggest the Quest field open parking lot next to the king street station. Probably $10 for all day. There might be cheaper lots around to the south if you are frugal.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v721/viperx27/map2.jpg
for the real penny pinchers you can try this area for free, usually only can't park there on game days, and the home opener isn't till Monday the 2nd.

I'm in for Saturday. My primary areas of interest are probably Pioneer Square, Pike Place Market, the International District, and the waterfront (not necessarily in that order).
And the trolley is currently not running (at least according to their website), but they do have a free bus running a similar loop. Not nearly as photogenic, though. ;)

Count me in for NW Trek on 4/1. I can drive 2-3 others as well. I live in Gig Harbor and hope to go for the Seattle meet as well.
If someone needs a ride to NW Trek it will be the old "1st come 1st served." Let me know and we can arrange a meeting place. Seems this link is getting quite confusing, at least for me. Email direct at dougbutch@comcast.net

"Hi Corey
Thank you for your inquiry about our photo tours, an option that we can give your group is to set up a private photo tour for your group. This, of course, would be contingent upon availability. Is April 1st your groups only available date? The cost for a private photo tour would be $450.00; the advantage of course, is that your group would be the only people on the tram and you could have more than 15 people. The reason we limit the number of people on the general public photo tours is when you get a group of photographers plus all their equipment on the tram space to spread out can be an issue.
Please let me know if this option is of interest to your group, if so, I will check on availability for a private photo tour. Tour times would probably be from 8-10am.
We would be thrilled if you wanted to share the images with us. I also wanted to let you know, this year NW Trek is sponsoring a photo contest (look for details on our web site at www.nwtrek.org ) there are categories for all levels of photographers.
Thank you for considering NW Trek and I look forward to working with you and your group. Hope to see you at Trek very soon!"

Yeah or nay?
I'm guess with more than 15 people, and many without long lenses, this is over kill, especially the price hike. Normal price is 11.50 IIRC, groups get in for $9, this is $30.
speaking of finances, the group rate has to be paid in advance (21 days). I'll ask her about what options we have.

I'll go with the majority on this one. Allthough it would be entertaining to have a space for ourselves since i've never been there before I can't judge if it would be worth it or necessary...

Will they actually stop the tram for a photog group? If so, it's probably worth it.
Also, given that we picked opening weekend of the Washington Spring Break, it may be the only decent option for the tram.

it's not that big of a deal is it?... I mean for the Trek it's probably worth the extra cash for the private tour but for Seattle is it a big thing?... I mean that city is pretty large surely it can hold a group of photographers and some random kids?... we'll just skip the zoo...

Definitely not an issue for Seattle unless you pick a big kid magnet, which I don't see as much of a threat. Trek may be another story. It's the opening weekend for Puyallup Schools break (one of the bigger districts in the Trek area), but as a weekend day, it may not make that much difference. Certainly the impact would be more apparent on a weekday.
As for the tram, I'm not going, so take this for what it's worth. For the typical photo weekends that they have from time to time, they remove some windows and stop the trams. I'd defer to Corey for knowledge on what they may do for a special group like POTN.

I dunno, it would be nice to have the tram to our selves, but I'm basing this around my own shooting style in that I wouldn't be using a tripod or need tons of space.
It is Sunday and they offered the tram ride in the morning, so you get the benefit of the church crowd and anyone that sleeps in not being there already. If we planned on taking the tram early regardless and just sweet talking them into letting us be all on our own tram, I don't see it as big of an issue. So I guess my vote is for ney, but I can be pursuaded.
I should also mention that the tram animals aren't my favorite, so its not as important to me, but I haven't been since oct. of 03
<AkulA>
7th of March 2007 (Wed), 19:10
Well how many people can we fit on one of those trams? The more we get, the cheaper it will be right? So if we could get enough people to make it even cheaper, that would be nice...

Mine either...I was thinking that for that price we'd have more than just a private tram ride...really that's not a great deal...we got pretty good shots taking the tram the normal way.

Let me throw one more thing out there. We're trying to go back to the Dominican Republic this summer for doing aid work. We're in the midst of our fund-raising, and looking at what we can do to help pay for the trip.
So I'm offering 1:1 teaching sessions on your choice of topic. Shooting, posing, lighting, printing, software, marketing, branding, getting clients, keeping clients, photo degrees, you name it.
You can do it Saturday or Sunday night, or if you're local really anytime will work.
It would be a tax deductible write off, and you'd be helping some really awesome people.

@ $450.00 you would have to have 45 people just to get it to $10 per person...sounds like they are asking too much...if you can take the regular tram for $9.50
T.D.
7th of March 2007 (Wed), 21:59
If they take out the windows and actually stop the thing it would be a lot better than the regular. And if you don't have to put up with the tour guide yapping the ENTIRE time, that alone would be worth it. ;)
I'm guessing they have a car or two they use for this kind of thing. Two people per seat just isn't realistic with a camera bag and constantly moving from side to side to get the shots. This sounds like the way to go to me, even though it's more.

I think it's worth it. If we want the tram to stop for a minute, they most likely will. If the action is on the other side of the tram from where you're at, you'll have to squeeze in between the family sitting on the good side to get a shot. With more room, and with a bunch of us all after the same thing, that wouldn't be a problem.

Money aside, NW Trek is able to provide folks like us, adults/kids opportunities to be "up close and personal" with a varity of wild life. Without a facility such as this many people would never see a wild animal in their natural habitat.

Hey Corey!
So what's the final verdict? Private tram or the usual tour for NW Trek?
Nancy & Dan would like to come along as well--I need to check to see if they're bringing her young daughter too. Do we have room for two or three more if we're going private tour?

If there wasn't at least some chance of showers, it wouldn't be Seattle.
Today was supposed to be wet and cloudy all day -- maybe a few minutes of sunshine. It ended up being great -- partly cloudy with lots of sunshine all day. Who knows. . .

Check out the rain gear thread here! http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=290551 - I use the optechs, they are great, but if you keep your hand in the plastic, it gets all muggy and full of condensation, better than direct rain I guess!

Weathermen are a little more consistent in their forecasts -- mostly sticking with partly sunny with a chance of showers. Could be a little cool, though. High temp was below 50 on the forecast I just saw.
Anyone, local or not so local, have any specific places on their must go lists? I'm probably going to try to get to the Market early, then head back to Quest Field to meet up with everybody. I'd like to wander around Pioneer Square and maybe the International District -- but other than the Market, nothing's certain.

Open to all, there were some that were afraid of the price tag, and I didn’t see 15 that were dead set on it, so I passed. I think it’ll still go really well and be a lot of fun, and the tram is only about 30-60 minutes of the day.
Could be some great photo ops of Mt. Rainier in the morning, might leave a bit of time to pull over along the way

I can't remember from all the various profiles of people coming on Saturday, but if there are folks from out of the area who have any questions, or if anyone feels the need to make a more concrete plan (my wife and oldest son are quite "type A," so I understand :D ), now's your last chance.

I just know that I'll be eager to start wandering (which is why I'm almost certainly going to go to the market early Saturday before heading over to Quest Field), and as much fun as it will be to visit with everyone, I don't want to end up standing around doing too much of the "What do you want to shoot? And this traffic advisory to those of you headed to Trek: Traffic on Meridian (aka 161), the road you'll likely travel for a while once you get off of highway 512, can be a pain. If you're headed out there for opening time, it probably won't be an issue for you, but any later, and on your return trip out of Trek, you might want to give yourself some extra time.
