The 135L is a brilliant lens... I absolutely love it. I think my next L might be the 35 f/1.4.

I know what you mean about rough works hours... I've been SO busy I haven't had too much time to go out and shoot, but I'm hoping this weekend proves to be better :)

Got any favorite places? I was just down closer to your area recently (two weekends ago)... down by the pier in Bayshore (end of Fifth Avenue)... In all my life on the Island it was my first time down there. iI may go back to Bayshore this weekend because there's this guy that seems to walk down main street every Saturday morning and I'm dying to get a shot of him!

I was in a smelly gym with smelly, sweaty guys, shooting a sparring season(boxing). Amy, if you were single and into sweaty/smelly guys, you could have your pick:wink:

LOL Pete... now boxing, there's something I've never shot before. I have a friend at work who's into ultimate fighting/cage fighting and he's always trying to get us to watch on TV (is it Spike TV that's been covering the matches?). Not my cup of tea really... but then I'm sure that's not surprising considering my gender - LOL

Everyone is more than welcome to come. Reception is on May 5th starting at 5pm. I plan on putting up an offical invite post with a sample picture as the date gets closer.

Exiting? Yes. Stressfull? even more! This is my second solo show since becoming a member of the co-op gallery in late 2003. I have to finish shooting, frame and hang it all before the 4th.

You can see the images from my first show in my profile (Rick Odell) on the gallery website.

Steve - we haven't really started talking dates yet... but there's no reason we couldn't...

Nice weather would be good, so how does sometime in May sound for everyone? Maybe the 2nd or 3rd weekend in May?
Anyone have ideas on location? We're a bit spread-out so we obviously won't find a place close to all of us, but maybe we could meet at a some kind of diner for coffee/brunch and then head out somewhere interesting to shoot?
Thoughts?

SloNeZ600 - I think you're the closest one to me so far! My daughter actually has some friends in the West Islip area.

Palladium - I think that's a great idea... but it might be better to do that on a future outing, when the weather is a bit warmer. I'm not sure if May is the best time to see whales? I thought it was late August, but I could be wrong... I'll ask my mom, she used to work for a Ocean research foundation out here and she knows that kind of stuff :)

So what does everyone think of the 2nd or 3rd weekend in May as a first meeting time? Let's see if we can get the date nailed down first and then we'll try to figure out there where and what...

DN,

From what I understand you don't even have to join (and pay fees) unless you want to participate in the competitions. I could be wrong about that, but the way I read the site the meetings and outtings are open to the public without paying the fee.

"The public is invited to attend all meetings but only members can participate in competitions and special events."

I don't find $45 a year all that offensive. That's $3.75 per month for the opportunity to go to 4 meetings and 4 outtings + participate in the competitions and events (year end dinner, holiday dinner, field trips?). *Shrug* really not all that bad to become a member and keep the club funded.

Chime in if you're available to come the weekend of April 14th or 15th?...
If I missed you, it wasn't personal! Just let me know and I'll add a "yes, no or maybe" to your name...

We don't have a time or place yet figured out, but I'm thinking maybe we could all meet at a diner or something first? Ideas? I'm open to them! Extreme western suffolk or eastern nassau would probably be good as it's central to the Island...

Hi Kevin... welcome! You're right in my neighborhood ;) -- I'm in Holbrook. Actually have family in Hauppauge and visit our local Comp USA quite often ;)

I'm not much of a hiker myself, but I do enjoy looking for interesting places to photograph, even if it's a "hike" to get there

So, where are we going to go? What are we going to shoot?

You Island guys/gals need to come up with a definite plan. Meeting at a diner is okay, but I would prefer it be DanteKing's diner in California. ;)

I'm in. Can someone please email me the details the Friday before?

my email is mdjak@aol.com

Thanks,
mark
PS: How about Coney Island? Is that too far? How about something near Kennedy Airport where we can shoot seabirds, planes landing/taking off, etc?

I don't think Homeland Security would be too keen on that. They've busted people taking pictures of the GW bridge, so I think hanging around an airport with a camera might arouse a response.

Perhaps I should have been more clear.

I just recently watched a documentary on the Concorde supersonic airliner. And I realize it was done a few years back when security wasn't uppermost on so many's minds.

There were a bunch of guys who were Concorde "buffs" who would go about a mile away (of course I don't know where) and shoot it when it would take off and land.

That's fine. I'm just trying to suggest something.

my girlfriend and my family's not very interested in photography.

For example I was showing my sister ( She had just came back from the Philippines, BEAUTIFUL country, has breath taking sunsets and views) how in one of the shots where there are two friends of hers in a restaurant, on top of a mountain and how the guys black jeans suddenly turned blue again, how the pale blue sky suddenly turned blue and clouds sprouted, how the green of the mountain was suddenly greener and then she turned to me and asked what did I do with her picture and demanded I leave it all alone.

Soo, I won't be joining you fine folks next weekend. I'm just going to fulfill my desire to take pictures by going to the NYC Auto Show tonight.

Hey Alex! I still have your aluminum business card you fancy schmancy photog, you. :D

I don't mean to put out any negative vibes here, but it seems to me as if this meet is dead. The OP hasn't been here, nobody has picked a spot to meet and later shoot, much less whether it's going to be Saturday or Sunday. That's really a shame. I was looking forward to it.

Sorry I haven't been around folks... My husband has been very ill, I cut my hand open, and my daughter came home from school with Lice (ew!) so it's been one helluva week. My husband is still very sick, so it's been hard for me to focus on much more than shuffling him back and forth to the doctor, taking care of him, and work.

I'm certainly still up for the get-together so if you want to figure out exactly when (time, Saturday or Sunday) and where I will certainly do my best to make it!

Amy, photography can wait, sometimes there are things that bump shooting down the priority ladder. I hope your husband gets well soon, and that your daughter will soon be lice-free. If she is using a lindane-based treatment, be careful with the duration of application, I have read some stories about it.

Back to the topic at hand, I am thinking of doing some street shooting in NYC soon, who's up to it?

Brandon, dang - you still making it out to the beach on the 21st?

As for regular, good ol' fashioned street shooting in NYC I'm down with that. I've been wanting to do that for a long time. Brings me back to my high school photography class field trip days... :D (I actually do want to get a picture of the "White Star" pier before it rusts into oblivion).

As for the Renn Faire at CW Post - good luck! We're supposedly getting the worst storm in 14 years today... I think all the action will be on the coastline! Perhaps a good chance to test the weathersealing of L zooms. :p

Fire Island Lighthouse is a good back drop.Robert Moses Causeway south, when you hit sand make a left.

Montauk Lighthouse. Rt27 west till it ends. You dont want to make this drive in the summer on a weekend. The Hampton crowds clog the road and theres only one way in and one way out. Great shots to be had in the harbour also.

Northshore has some nice rocky beaches. South shore has nice sandy beaches. There Belmont Lake State Park, Planting Fields in Oyster Bay, countless little marinas and docks. Lots more but those are the places that come to mind.
