Just under four months since the D40, Nikon has announced an upgraded ten megapixel version of the D40 camera.

So everything is minmum 10mp now, Canon's 30D successor must come with 12 megapixel and is bound to come very soon.

Why does cannon "have to" come out with 10mpx?

We all know that megapixel wars is a general consumer marketing plot. I'll be still happy if canon comes out with a new 30D with 8mpix if it has iso6400 etc etc.

The D40x isn't a rumor though...?

The D40x does NOT replace the D40 - it's sitting alongside it.

It isn't, but he's using the Nikon to lay this idea:

Which would be speculation

With the same flash sync of the D40 (1/500), improved frame-rate and same sensor as the d80/D200, Its now even better camera then the D80

is that true or just a Rumor ;) .

Any camera thats an update or new can only benefit us all as it up's new ider's and thoughts among the camera maker's.

No, it's simply a statement. Nothing more and nothing less. Now if he'd said "I heard the new 40D is gonna be 10mp, blah blah blah..." then that would have been a rumour.

+1 on that.

I read somewhere that the D40X (and originally the D40 as well) was clearly a competitor for the XTi. How do you guys think this thing will fair up against the XTi? Any idea on how much (or how little, or maybe even not at all) it will out-muscle the XTi?

Yes now its 1/200 but a couple of hours ago, it was 1/500 on dpreview specs

well i wonder if this means the D40 was as much of a failure as we thought it would be.

actually the D40 wasnt really in competition at all, it was meant to fill the lower price bracket, but with less specs than the XT at the same or more cost i dont see why anyone would buy it other than ignorance or brand loyalty. the D80 was originally considered the competitor to the XTi, although i always placed it somewhere between the XTi and the 30D. this new D40X seems like the XTi's best match.

At Best Buy D40 is 599 and XT is 699.

God, just kill the D40 line already. Nikon should be putting more out for it's advanced amateurs that don't want something as handicapped as the D40 but can't afford a D200 or D2X or anything.

I feel the theory of SLRS is slowing dieing. When a kid in my class told me he owned a Rebel XTi, yet he has no idea what he is doing, and does not respect various types of photography I feel a little agitated. When I offered him a piece of paper with my website name on it, so he could get an idea of what I shoot and what type of photography he thinks is a joke is, he refused, and walked away acting like I was something from another planet.
Regardless, when the camera is telling you what to adjust, even in manual modes, and how the scene should be, I feel something is wrong. With the introduction of the MK III and the Live LCD, I fear, that eventually the Live LCD will be on cameras such as the future Rebel's, and people will begin buying them and not even using the viewfinder, the principal theory behind an SLR (single lens reflex -- looking through the lens that you shoot with.)

Many comparative reviews already had the D40 beating the 400D as the best entry-level body. If this upgrade shakes up Canon, it'll be all to the good.

i believe you are talking about the D80. because the D80 definitly had a lot of reviews having it best the 400D, which i would say is fair, its the better camera. but the D40? i havnt seen any such article myself, then again i havnt looked

No. I meant the D40 ( 'Amateur Photographer' magazine.)
Reviewers don't put pixel count first, any more than we should.

then how about ability to use all of a brands AF lenses, how about largest range of ISO's, what about usability of the said ISO's.

Don't shoot the messenger!
(* but I note you didn't list build quality, image quality at lower ISO's, relative performance of kit lenses, general handling and beginner-friendliness)

lol i didnt mean to. sorry :)
(build quality i feel is subjective, i personally dont like the way nikons feel too much. as to IQ at lower ISO, the D40 doesnt even have an ISO100, other than that i dont really know, cause i have had no reason to look. as to beginner friendliness, they both have all the automatic modes you could want, but in this catagory i think the new D40x takes the cake with an onboard help feature .)
