It's time to buy a new toy, but it can't exceed $1500, and it should be a Canon lens, what would you buy?

For $1,100 you can get the:

28-70 F2.8L ($1100)
80-200 F2.8L ($1100) IS version = $1800
100-400 F4.5/5.6L ($1,499)

With the 28-70 or 80-200 non-IS you would have enough left over to get a S900 printer :-)

Doctor Moth,

This is a bit like asking "how long is a piece of string?". :) However, my suggestion is a lot less than USD1500:

the wonderful Canon EF135L f/2

ive gotta say depending on what you are shooting that the 70 200 2.8 L IS is incredible...you can find it for around 1700...i know that is more but the lens rocks...

135 f2 L

AWESOME

add a 1.4x

AWESOME

I've used the 70-200 also, it's very good, but the 135 f2 is small, and has great resolving power, giveing you a tad more contrast that d60ers need.

I am now considering the Sigma 20 for my D30
has anyone used this or an alternative suggestion for about the same price. £300

Depends on what you shoot, I shoot commercial fashion, so an aperature of 5.6 is fine for me So I would definately say the most used and most versatile lens I have is the canon 35-350 L without a doubt. I have done comparison left and right and while it is not as sharp as a 50 1.4 it certainly has proven to be sharp enough for billboard sized enlargements at aperatures of 5.6 and 8.0 easily.

That said the lenses I find the best to have overall woud cost more but thats the 28-70 2.8 70-200 2.8 IS and a wide if you use them. Look used for these you may be in your price range for a 28-70L and 70-200 non IS L's they are lenses that should be in every photographers bag.
