Does anyone know if Canon will update this lens with their next generation 4 stop IS that is currently used on the 70-200 f4 IS?

probably not for a long time.

It's anyone's guess, really. There's also the circular aperture blades in the f/4 version.

Didn't know the 2.8 IS didn't have teh circular blades.

Coreypolis - Just curious, is there any reason why you think it won't be for a long time?

its one of their most popular lenses, the 3 stop IS still works great, theres a lot of other lenses that people having been asking for/updated for a long long time (200 f/2 IS for example)

But with Canon these days you never know. Nobody saw the 85 or 16-35 updates coming.

How do you guys know what gen IS a particular lens has?

It would probably take more weight (in motor muscle) to accuate F2.8 glass beyond the current 3-stop correction.

Besides, if you want to recover that extra stop over the F4, do it the superior way - by opening the aperture. :)
