Looking at getting something with a longer reach (mostly for nature type shots but sometimes for sports indoors and out). Have been looking at the Canon 75-300 USM and the Sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro, both run under $200 at B&H. Question is, which one is better for quality of shots and speed of AF. Are either one of these good as a starter lens? Both are 58mm and I have all the filters for that. Thanks in advance for any and all help on this.

from what I have heard and read the sigma would give you better results...:)

Well, with no experience with either one, I would have to say the long running thread here titled something like "Canon 75-300 worst lens ever", I'd have to say the Sigma that does not seem to have a similar thread must be better.

I went and found the thread for you, I personally have not read it, as neither lens appeals to me, and I have a better lens anyway.

The sigma is supposed to be the best of all that range of zooms, EXCEPT for the EF 70-300 IS USM lens. And perhjaps the Tamron 70-300 - that has a good reputation and I have seen some interesting test results on it where it compared favourably to the sigma - and it's half the price (almost anyway!)

I think IS is well worth having, as at 300mm there is a LOT of camera shake. Maybe worth saving longer to get the better lens? If that si not what you arte looking for, then go for the sigma, or the Tamron 70-300 and spend the difference on a good tripod - you'll certainly be glad of one.

Sigma hands down. The USM is a waste of money on that simple of lens. That sigma you can get for $150 or less some places.

I bought the new APO for $180 just 2 months ago and I haven't found any big negatives so far with it. It is by far better than the Canon 75-300 as I used that previously as well... I would go with the Sigma hands down if it is between those two options.

I have the sigma and for the price I dont think you can beat it. Check out my gallery. Almost every shot was taken with it. My avatar was taken with it also:)

OK, went with the sigma. B&H says it will be here in a few days and then we will see how it goes.
