Just shot a wedding and I went to backup my RAW files on DVD. My computer will let me copy the files from one hard drive to the other or from HD to Flash Drive. But when I select the files then Right Click to "Send to DVD CD Drive" the comp. says Windows has encountered a Error and will only download 1/4 of the files. I have already re downloaded the images to the comp. and I have taken my external drive to another comp. with the same results. I am a little pissed since I took every step in making sure the CF Cards were Formated and all images were deleted. I have never used a card reader or formatted a CF card on the computer. CF card is always in the camera and I have never had a problem untill now. Am I screwed or is there a software program that burns DATA to DVD. Maybe someone has had the same prob. I really want to be able to give them a DVD of the Full Res. pics and not a Flash Drive. All the files work and open just fine it just wont let me burn a CD or DVD. PLEASE HELP!!!

Did any software come bundled with your DVD burner, like Nero Express or Roxio? It makes the process a whole lot easier and reliable. Are you able to copy other types of files to a DVD using your method? If the files are on your hard drive and you can copy them and view them, I don't think there is an issue with the CF or formatting.

The other question might be is what you are going to give to the people. You would want to give them hi-res JPG's converted form RAW rather than straight RAW files, unless they are photographers themselves and have software to process and manipulate the RAW files.

I dont have any software other than what is bundled in XP the comp. came with the burner. I would like to backup the RAW files for my own archiving and give them Hi Res JPEGS on a DVD, I am so lost I am going to search the web and find a program if all else fails MPIX can make a CD from the files I upload on their site.

Usually if your computer came installed with burner, in the bundled software you will have either NERO or Roxio or another burning application... check your start menu programs, you may not even know its there... otherwise, you may want to invest in buying it (unless you can find something for free, I don't know what's out there)... or else your internal DVD burner may be almost useless... I've made a fair number of coasters trying to use XP's burning tools.

I would strongly suggest you invest in either Nero or Roxio. Both programs are easy to find. You also need to KNOW that the disc you are writing to is finalized or you may not be able to read the disc with any other computer. The media you use in the drive is also important. I recently started using Taiyo Yuden DVDs after having problems with other brands. It sounds like you are shooting blind with the method you are using. (I'd be afraid to do it) For the future, leave the images on your CF cards until you have backed up to DVD. That way you have two copies. If you have copied the images to your hard drive and you can see them in "MY Computer", you should be OK. The more pissed you get the more likely you will make a disastrous error.

I hope it all works out for you.

I bought the full Nero package and love it for backing up my RAW files to DVD. I never had any trouble with the windows way of burning but I wanted a little more control.

Nero does offer a free download that is fully functional for 30 days. Why not give that a go.

Thanks for the help everyone I downloaded Nero last night and I burned all the files successfully!!! Also Nero allowed my burner to burn at 16X the Windows default burning program would always burn DVD's at 2X and it would take about 45mins. to burn a few gigs. I am so relieved now I can dump everything on my CF cards.

Oh yeah!! So glad to hear it! I am sure most of us have faced the data loss monster in some form. That faster speed is an incredible relief isn't it?
