I just ordered a 100-400 from B&H and alaready have a Sigma 1.4tc. I read the tc sticky and it says AF will not work.

Is this one of the combo's where you can tape some pins and get AF?

If yes, can you offer some details?

Cam's a 30D btw.

Thanks a bunch,
Robert

I can't confirm your particular combo, but on the 20D and 1-4IS and Kenko Pro 1.4x (pins taped), AF is achievable but you need a lot of light and a contrasty subject and ctrpt AF. You'll need to simply experiment with your particular set up. Here's the tape trick info http://www.pbase.com/lightrules/image/53316917/original

I use a Sigma 1.4x TC on my 100-400 IS, and IQ/AF are decent with the 1DM2.

On the 20D/350D/300D, however, AF doesn't work well with the 100-400 even if the pins are taped on the Sigma 1.4x - it hunts endlessly and very seldom locks on. This is the same behavior as a taped Canon 1.4x TC on the said combos. The only wired 1.4x TC that AFs well at f/8 with 1.6 CF bodies when taped, in my experience, is the Kenko Pro 1.4x. The standard Tamron 1.4x AFs ok too in this situation without the need for taping.

Thanks for the comments. Reading some other places, sounds like the Kenko might be the thing to have.
