When C.Fn-04 is set to 1 or 3 does the lens IS only work while the * button is depressed for AF?

Thanks in advance...

I believe it will work as long as the shutter button is half way down after being activated by the back button focus...I will have to test that though...seems this is the way it works...

In the case you mention, the IS function will work either when the * button is pressed for focus or when the shutter realease button is pressed half way for exposure. You can see & hear the IS working.
Of course if you hae a 10D, more often than not your'll end up with Error1 anyway... or is that just my luck? :x

This must be just your experience. I have had my 10D for almost a year now and have put through thousands of shots and have never had that error. Maybe I'm just lucky.

18K on the 10D and about 10K of those on the 100-400. No errors though I did have the AF go belly-up on the lens. Repaired and works awesome once again!

I just don't understand why people put up with errors or malfunctions with their equipment and then complain about it instead of just sending it in for servicing. For how much I paid for my 100-400 lens, I would be very quick to get on the phone with the Canon repair center if there is even a hint of something being wrong with the lens. But maybe that's just me.

...I'd have no luck at all.
I get the error1 with this lens and my 10D only when the IS is on.
I don't like complaining about it either  but I can't part with the lens long enough for it to get repaired. I bought it locally at Samy's camera and am hoping for a replacement to come in this week. I like my salesguy a lot, but the acid test is support when things go bad, especially on new equipment.
So I guess I wasn't complaining, but sharing. That's what it's all about, isn't it?
:D

The error 01 happens with the D60, 10D, 1D, and 1Ds that I am aware of, so it is a lens issue. It only happens under rare circumstances, usually shooting into very bright sunlight in cold temperatures. You can re-take the same shot and it won't happen.

Amongst my group of colleagues, ten have a 100-400L and all of them have seen the error 01 at some point. The best is once in nearly three years and the worst is twice in two years. It isn't anything to panic about or a reason to ship the lens back to Canon. I have seen it once in two years and I'll live with that. It appears to be a design quirk rather then a fault.

Kenny: Must be kinda like when we look directly at the sun and sneeze. It's not a defect and we can look at it 1 minute later and no sneeze.

Same thing. ;)

I have heard that is a common problem. I don't run the IS all that much and don't shoot at the sun hardly at all, so that's probably why I have not run across that one (yet).

Thanks all for the replys.

In the manual for the lens it appears that the IS is controlled the same as the AF, hence if C.Fn-04 is set to 3, the IS will not operate off of the shutter button, but as the AF does with the * button only.

I've been working so I haven't had a chance to get out and try it yet, but I will tomorrow....

Thanks again....
