OK, there is a distance scale on the bottom of the LCD display on the 550, this indicates the range that the flash will work for with the current settings. The manual shows that you can see metres or feet. Mine is showing feet, but I prefer metres.

I have flicked through the manual and can't see how I can change this setting. Anyone know how it's done?

Someone must know!

BTW
WOOHOO, just got my new flash today! Very nice! Very Big! Very Heavy! It makes my 10D look seriously mean. God damn it is bright on a test fire, don't point it at something close and white when testing, you'll be seeing stars!

Mark,

Can't find it in the manual either (but I glaze over as soon as I open that manual  ).

Anyway, hold the flash with the head upwards and with the battery compartment facing towards you. Pop the battery cover open and the door will swing away to the left. If you look inside at the top right hand side of the battery compartment you will see a tiny little switch marked M and FT. Simply flick this (it goes up or down).

Cheers

Ian

Found it, thanks.

Pretty subtle little switch isn't it!

Rechecking the manual there is a quick mention on page 6 where there is a description of different parts of the flash.

Battery compartment cover (Page 10)
* The battery compartment has a switch to display the distance in feet or meters on the LCD panel.

Of course on page 10 the battery compartment is mentioned, but no picture of the switch or anything. As far as I can see there is no mention ever again in the manual of this switch.

Manual helpfulness for metres/feet setting - 2/10
iwatkins helpfulness for metres/feet setting - 10/10

Thanks Ian
