Am newly retired and plan on traveling via motorhome taking photos of wildlife and nature and probably will want to make 20x24, 24x30 or 30x40 prints to sell at art shows etc. Now have 1D, D60, L lenses and have a 1D Mark II on order. Am wondering if I should get the 1Ds instead and why? Any comments would be welcome.
Thanks
Jerry

1Ds. Why? Megapixels. If you're wanting to do large prints like that the 1Ds is the clear shoice. Not that the MKII won't be able to perform to those sizes, but when it comes to large prints, nothing beats megapixels. You'd be wasting half the MKII's features by using it solely as a landscape camera.
Like I said, it will perform for sure, and I will use my MKII (also) as a landscape camera, but I need the speed for shooting sports and therefore a 1Ds does me no good whatsoever.
However, with a new 1Ds on the horizon you might consider waiting just a bit longer for the new 1Ds which is expected this fall or Spring 2005

Thanks for your remarks, but I am heading to Alaska in May and don't want to wait for the new 1Ds in Oct or next year.

What about the Kodak? Full frame, 14MP, for about the price of a 1DMKII. It should be available by May.

I have a 1D and bought a 1Ds about 6 nmonths ago. Initially I missed the burst rate of the 1D but have gotten over it. I will probably trade the 1D in for a Mk II in the summer. The 1Ds would be great for Alaska. You will be happy with either, but if you want nlarge prints go for the 1Ds.

Then get the current 1Ds. It'll serve you well. Stay far away from the Kodak. Even the new one(s) has problems.

Hello:
I shoot professionally; Canon digital for the last two years. We're looking at the upgrading to either the MkII, the 1Ds, or the new Kodak/Canon 14mp coming to a theatre near you soon.
Right now, I'd go for the MkII. My thoughts are that the extra 3 mp of the 1Ds is not worth almost $3,000. Put the extra $$ into some other L glass. Or bank the extra $$ and upgrade to somthing better next year. With proper file processing, you will have no trouble getting the size prints you want with the MkII. We do it with our 6mp Canon.
The old adage, "size isn't everything" holds for digital as well, in my opinion.
Thanks.
