Hello,

I have a client looking to re-create the American Gothic Painting and I'm going to shoot them this Sunday. I'm looking for ideas to help re-create it.

The painting: http://www.artic.edu/artaccess/AA_Modern/pages/MOD_5_lg.shtml

My ideas were:

1.) Shoot them from a fair distance away with a 5D and 135L (painting has a narrow background indicating a more distant perspective).

2.) Shoot them in front of a white background and just slightly overexpose it (not enough for it to spill onto their clothes, and they will be a fair distance from the background) so it is easier to cut them out later and superimpose them onto the american gothic painting itself

3.) One light camera left 50° or so and high with either a 36x48 softbox or a diffused beauty dish. Second light or possible reflector to limit the shadows and about a stop of difference or so.

4.) Superimpose them onto the background and apply some effects in photoshop to make them better blend and look more painting like.

In case you haven't already guessed, step four is where I could use the most help. Does anyone have any suggestions for the actual effects and blending them into the painting? The cutting out and cloning in the background in necessary spots isn't difficult for me, its making them look like they were painted in there that is tough.

Also, if anyone knows where I can purchase a high resolution scan of this painting for this purpose I would appreciate it. I probably also could use any licensing information you guys might have for this purpose in case the source for my scan doesn't have it.

Matt

Just an aside, but it seems to me that this article on copyright: "Can I Make a Painting of a Photograph?" (http://painting.about.com/cs/artistscopyright/f/copyrightfaq5.htm) also holds true in reverse (i.e., can I make a photograph of a painting?).

perhaps you missed this in my first post:
