View Full Version : The never ending pricing question *sigh*

An artist I shot last weekend in Germany is doing a tour in Ireland later this month. He's done the interviews with press already and they asked for pictures. I said he could go ahead and give them some (bear in mind that he doesn't have hi-res pix) as long as I get credited.

Now, this got me thinking. The more pictures I take the more requests for use I get. With my website clients I basically give them free usage on the site but if their endorsers wants a pic I would ask for compensation.

I haven't been in this position before as everything I have shot has either been for website clients or pure hobby. Things are gradually changing so I need to figure out where to put myself price wise.

Be it for magazines, tour programmes etc. I'll still give my webclients free webuse, though.

I'm UK based so will have to think UK pricing.

Any pointers greatly appreciated.

It's hard to advise on pricing - depends who it is, usage etc.

But if people think your work is good enough to use/publish, it is good enough for them to pay for. Charge what you think it is worth, don't sell yourself short is my only advice and specify what clients can use the images for!

There are online calculators for just this issue ... I don't have a URL in hand but I recently looked at one provided by D-65 (Google them) on their website which helped me do a deal for $750USD for ten images for web use only (check has been deposited.) I was also involved in a totally different deal for $225/image for web use only but it was international TV and they found something that worked better ... sigh ... but that was the price that they proposed for five years per image ... low but acceptable. When making a proposal it may help to be able to refer the potential client to such a calculator ... give 'em a reality check. Then move from there to working out a package deal of some sort. I take into account that I have already been paid to shoot the images as well as the ability of the client to pay ... many musicians have day jobs to support their filthy habit. ;)

Now, I just need to find someone to do my website for free!

Cheers, mate. That helps. I got to say, the artist asked for my permission to use the pics for press use in this instance and I agreed as long as I get credited. then I started thinking that I should have told him to get the paper to contact me.

I have a press photog friend in my home country who will kill me when I tell him what I did.
