Hi all,

This is my first picture post so please be nice. :)

This is a large queen wasp that scared the *&$££% out of me when i found it in a box in the loft.
It was very docile with me having just woken it up out of hibernation so i got it on a sheet of paper and started shooting.

No animals were harmed during the making of this picture.

Welcome Bob to POTN!. Your shot is almost like from a cartoon (this is positive :)). Did you use a lightbox to get so white background?

Dave, i think it depends on where you are in the world as to whether it's a wasp or hornet :)

Olli, thanks for the welcome, no it was just on a sheet of white paper taken at a low angle.

I dont mean to be a smart arse! But a wasp and a Hornet are two different beasties....even here in England!Have a look here for pics of both......

Dave,
I have to bow to you Hornet knowledge, thanks very much for the species ID. I had tried to find pictures around the web to get an ID but with no joy. I have now bookmarked your website.

LordV,
Some superb shots on your two sites, i've tried the stacking using your instuctions, had mostly good results. Thanks for the info.

Craig,
Some very nice macro shots on your site but you do have a strange fascination with buskers ;) i have attached another couple of shots.

Thanks for the great welcome to POTN.

Bob

Excellent first image, love the facial expression of curiousity. Just out of curiousity, what is the difference between hornets and wasps?

Hiya Bob,

Excellent shots, I sure that's a Hornet as once stung by one you never forget em.

Cheers for now

Hiyas Dave,

I don't think there is much difference between the two, Wasps, Hornets are of the same Family ' Vespidae ', Hornets are much bigger, browner & damn aggressive if disturbed, bit like me if woken suddenly

They Britain's largest social wasp ' Vespa crabro '

I got stung in my arse when I was young & it felt as I would imagine a red hot poker being rammed up your arse would be, Christ they hurt but a wasp sting is just slightly painfull unless of course one is allergic but that's a different story.

Cheers for now
Mark

What you have there is a European hornet, Vespa crabro.
