I had distant hopes for some kind of surprise with new Canon SLRs even though they said there wouldn't be. I also thought they might formally announce new prices for older models like the 5D.

Some rebates will start later... they have stocks over there that they need to be reduced.... thatīs also the idea under the 20th Anniversary Camera kits (already announced), specially the 30D (also some 1D Mk II) and if we are lucky also some other bodies (but may be with less price reduction). It always depends on what the other brands fix (competence, you know ...)

Some news about Sony: Alfa system expanded:

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/digital-cameras/breaking-pma-07-sony-alpha-protoype-first-pics-of-high-amateur-model-242688.php

Not too much details, new sensor (no details yet), higher performance than Aplha 100; The highest-end flagship model will have an even higher-rez BIONZ image processor that was specifically developed for it. The company also announced it will add more lenses to the line, such as 24-70mm, 70-300mm, 28-250mm lenses

Maybe they put it on backwards to hide the Canon label. :)

The Sony bodies (especially the grip) look horrible; the Olympus looks reasonable though.

ah the tilt and swivel lcd - no doubt a feature of the 1DMkIIIn in 2008, they had to hold back on something.

ewwww no. there wouldn't be a way to weather seal it or maintain its structural integrity. what happens when a press photog is using it above their head at a demonstration and they are pushed from behind and it breaks off on the way down? etc etc. Great for P&S's but would be awful on a pro body.

I am disappointed by Canon, mainly because I had money to spend. I'll just have to wait.

the other reason is canon just seems to be letting others get all the news. they release one camera and it seems that everyone else seems to release news on a couple of cameras.

rushing a camera to a show and not delivering it soon after or if its an inferior model gets them no where. They just released the best overall camera available, its just not what you're looking for. We get caught up in the latest greatest item debate, but all of the current available cameras are more than capable of getting the job done.

while that is true, the perception of a company by the public is it's reality. Even those who just keep an eye out on the market sees that canon isn't releasing cameras (regardless of due dates) will think they are falling behind.

My 10D hasn't fallen apart yet :) which I am glad. but you know it would be nice to have something newer. it's not a need, just a want.

they have fallen behind in some areas, but a 40d thats just higher mp and anti dust doesn't get them to take bake their market share from the d200.

It seems to me that Canon is starting to lag way behind. Especially in the prosumer line, especially the 30D. Almost all other camera manufacturers have something that exceeds the 30D. Now yes I agree the 30D probably out performs a lot of the 10 megapixel camera that are out there. But perception is that in that area, Canon has fallen behind. Nikon now has the D40X which is 10 megapixel which was just announced. It seems that the market that Canon had 2 yrs ago, is no longer there. I'm not talking about the monsters, but the $1,000 to $2,000 range cameras. I am very happy with my 30D and my 5D, but the 30D is way overdue for some major overhauls.

I think that considering how the 1D bodies get bumped around, Canon would have to call it a tilt and snap-off LCD. :)

Dude, I am sure they are releasing some serious printers. Does anyone pay attention to the phat accesories? Do you print pictures? or just take em, and delete em? What's the point?

I am sure cameras will come and go. Glass will last. Prints are your fruit. Without a decent printer, they are just wasted paper.

They are also catering to family's that are into HD with products like this --> HDCamcorder (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=177&modelid=14869)

Trust me, they know what they are doing. Live view on a 'Canon DSLR?' WHAT? Come-on...when was THIS ever possible?

The 40D, or whatever it will be called, will be more of an upgrade over the 30D than what some rumours indicate. At the minimum, of course, will be 10+ Mpx & anti-dust. But it'll get an improved AF system as well, possibly from the 5D. We could see a larger viewfinder and possibly a couple of the new 1D III features as well. It might even include higher ISO operation and live preview.

I don't know for certain, but I'm sure that it'll be more than a 30D with more pixels and dust removal.

thats my point, if they didn't reinvent it they'd lose more market share than by not putting anything out and making sure its a good replacement.

I think Canon wants to gobble up potential D200 buyers. Nikon really did set a bar for features at a low price point with that camera. The 30D line is the logical place for a competitive Canon camera to go. So they not only have to (more or less) match the feature set and price point of the D200, but they also have to anticipate what the D300 (or whatever) will bring. That is a very lucrative market to get into, because there are lot of pros who get by just fine with a 20D/30D or a D200, plus a lot of enthusiasts who are willing to buy into those lines.

I think that they'll meet the D200, but will do so at a price that Nikon won't be able to match.

Or they can just start drop down the price of the 30D & lenses to compete, just after PMA and reduce their stocks, until the 40D (or whatever) will be available in next fall.

I suppose that's a big welcome surprise for those that can afford it but for me it's so far out of reach it may as well be on the moon!

Fantastic technology to be sure but distant!

Now, if Canon announced a 40D or some other 30D replacement I would be very excited!!!:D:D:D

Best for whom? Certainly not me because of the price. I believe the best camera released by Canon will be the 40D maybe in a year or so. That will be one I can afford.

It's kind of like saying the best car is a Ferrari but I can't afford one so the best for me might be a Chevrolet!

If they lowered the price a couple grand then I would be all over one! But, that's not going to happen!!! So, I'll hold out for a 40D or 5D I guess! I would be very happy with one of the 2. The 5D is looking better!
