I've been using the St-e2 and 580 ex for a while now just for some off camera flash lighting. I have now purchased a Metz 58-AF1 and want to be able to use the 580ex as a main light and the Metz for fill, both of them off camera. The problem is I can't find the manual for the St-E2 anywhere (not even on the canon site) and I'm not sure what settings to use for the transmitter or the flashes. I shoot in manual mode 95% of the time and the camera I use is the 1DMKIIN. I would like to keep things simple and be able to change the lighting intensity by adjusting the FEC on camera between shots, while keeping the ratios the same if that makes any sense.

Is there anyone with this or a similar setup that can describe the settings they use. ie set transmitter to... set 580 to... set 58AF1 to... and fire away.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

TIA, Mike :)

I don't own a ST-E2 nor the Metz 58, but I will try :) Assuming the Metz in slave mode works like the 580.

First set both flashes and the ST-E2 to the same channel, like all in channel 1.

Set the 580 to slave mode and in group A, and the Metz to slave, group B.

Turn the power switch of the ST-E2 to "I", press the button next to "Ratio" to turn on that light, then use the "left and right" arrow bottons to set the "A:B" ratio to 2:1.

That's it, fire away. Now you the main light (580 in group A) it twice as strong to the fill light (Metz in group B). Change the "A:B" ratios to other settings to find the right combo you like.

Is the Metz 58-AF1 supposed to be compatible with the Canon infrared flash system? I didn't know that there were aftermarket compatable flashes.

Learn something every day around here.
