I got 2 new Canon lenses 24-70 2.8 L and 17-40 4.0 L.
What is strange for me is the big difference of zooming with those 2 lenses.
With 24-70 lens the zoom ring is very dificult  to rotate it fine between 24-28 and even between 28 and 70 is working much more difficult (with friction) than 17-40 lens.
What is more unlikely thing is that between 24 and 28 it is difficult to fix on focal length that I want. The friction betwen the moving and stable parts is so big that when I try to rotate the ring is jumping from 24 to next pozition and not gooing linear.
There are other 24-70 lens owners with the same problem?
Could you answer me quick because I can change the lens in first 2 weeks.
Thanks,

That doesn't sound right. I have both lenses as well, and I've never experienced any problems with zooming on the 24-70. As long as it's new, I'd get it checked. It could be a sign of future problems.

Hi,
I am very happy to use the 24-70 L since a few months too. This lens is absolutely brilliant in my opinion. Therefor I can't state or understand the experience you have made right now. The zooming from 24 up to 70 is very smoothly and defenitely without any "friction". You should bring/send back your "new baby" immediatelly and get another one without any compromise!
Good luck,
J.

I have the 24-70, and I don't notice anything like that. The feel of the zoom ring is the same from 24mm to 70mm. I'd have it checked out.
Have Fun

Definately sounds like a bad zoom ring.

I just bought these two lenses as well.... I don't think I have the problem you are having... so far I love these two lenses for digital and film use.

I have a 24-70 lens. The first one I received stuck a little when going from 24mm up but not the other way. Anyway, for that much money I sent it back to B&H and they sent me another lens that didn't have that problem. Bite the bullet and send it back; it'll be back before you know it.

I agree - send it back for a replacement.
