I am involved with a CCTV wildlife project. Live images are to be screened onto a television screen by way of a camera fitted into a place of interest.

Part of my involvment will be to take occasional photos of the events happening on the TV screen.

My question is this: what are the most suitable settings which will eliminate, or at least minimise the lines that are visible when taking a snapshot of a screen. (see attached).

The image will be published on a website.

Settings used here were :
(Canon 20D with kit lens)
1/100"
F7.1
ISO 400
focal length 55mm

Many thanks.

If the motion of the screen is slow, that is not a lot of movement, set the shutter speed to something like 1/30 or slower for NTCS and 1/25 for PALS if it allows. That will give the pic enough time to paint the entire image. If the picture is on a computer monitor, set the refresh rate of the monitor as high as it will go. My monitor will run at 100 MHZ non-interlaced so a shutter speed of 1/100 will allow the whole image to paint.

cant you watch the video on your PC, then you can take a screen shot of it. As there should be a print screen button on your keyboard.

thanks gjl711 for the advice. It is indeed PAL, therefore 1/25 shutter speed.

Dandaman, it's not a video, but live pictures coming in and screened on a TV screen, hence the need to take shots of the screen.

Again, thanks for your suggestions, much appreciated.

Just get a computer with a capture card and get screen shots with that. it will yield MUCH better images than what you are doing.

You might want to fix up the camera on a tripod (or piece of furniture, etc.) pointed squarely at the centre of the screen. Plug in a cable release and then whenever something interesting happens just hit the button on the cable release. Much more convenient.

+1. You're killing quality by shooting a small tv screen. Capture cards are cheap, and you can run them in a five year old pc.
