View Full Version : I need your help on a lens decision

I need something to compliment my 28-75 2.8 DI Tamron for when I go to baseball games. I have discovered that I can buy a Canon 75-200 f4L for around $530, much cheaper than I ever thought I could buy L glass.

My questions are these...Do you think that this is enough focal length and is it fast enough to shoot baseball in a major league stadium (I'm not that far from the action)? Also...B&H has this for sale at $529.99 or $549.99 with a USA warranty...Should I care about "grey market"?

Thanks

For sports, the more speed the better. If you can afford it, go for the 70-200 f/2.8 non-IS, and add the 1.4 Extender II. That way in better lighting, for the same f stop as the f/4 you get 280mm (or 280x1.6 for the crop factor). Whether or not you buy Grey, is a personal preference and depends on who you buy it from. If you buy it from B&H you'll probably be fine. Grey market goods are warranteed by the seller only and any aftermarket warranty they include with the lens. Mack warranties have a good rep.

I think you will still want something longer than 200mm for use in a major league ballpark. Unless you are way down close (and need the wider angle), I think the 100-400 is a better choice (ka-ching, ka-ching).

Funny you should mention baseball and lens choices today. I went to an assembly at my daughter's elementary school this morning, and I took the Drebel with the 28-135. The Bird mascot from the Orioles showed up as a surprise guest (kids went crazy), and I was noticing that in the school gym, which is not that big, the 135 was just a touch shorter than I would have liked. I could almost fill the frame, but a head shot was out of the question. 200mm is not that much longer, and even second base in a major league park is further than that from the stands behind home plate. 200mm might be okay if you just want to stay in the infield, but the outfield (and/or bullpen) is a different matter.

As for grey market, the only difference is the warranty (and rebates if they are active). I prefer to go with the USA, but that is my choice.

Hope this helps.

From my experience for baseball/softball, with the 70-200mm you need to be on the sideline. I usually shoot from between home and 1st, and home and 3rd.

If I am twice the distance away, I slap on my 2x TC.
