How does the 85/1.8 rate when shooting wide open?
I've got a f/1.2 on loan that I can't seem to get in focus but maybe once out of 10 shots on a 10D. Granted, that one looks great, but the others are so bad they are unusable.
Trying to again justify the $1300 difference.

It's pretty good wide open, but it could be better as it closes down.

The 85mm f.12 is really tough to get good focus on wide open. When I use it I focus manually and then focus bracket my shots a little to cover my hindquarters. The 85mmf 1.8 is only slightly better in that respect. I use the same trick when shooting wide open with it too. For the effect that either lens provides wide open it is worth it to me manual focus and to focus bracket. Stop the lens down a little and these problems go away. As for which one to buy....If you have the money the f1.2 is amazing! If you're on a budget the f1.8 is an incredible piece of glass as well. Either way I think you'll be pleased.

p.s. the f1.8 focuses faster and weighs about a million pounds less.
