View Full Version : OK, who's going to talk me into it?

The 24-70L, that is....
I have had very good luck with my 28-105, but its a little slow, aperture-wise. I've owned a used but clean 24-85 for about 24 hours and I'm not satisfied - its soft even stopped down. I fear the inevitable - that I will go to "L" if I don't change my ways.
So, someone talk me into or out of that lens. :)

Don't do it. Just use plenty of Unsharp Mask it will clear that 24-85 right up. :D

When *I* get to this stage in the "consideration" process, I know I'm gonna buy it anyway. If you're anything like me... making this post is just kidding yourself - surrender to the inevitable :P

If a bunch of us will each pledge a box of Kraft Dinner will that make the ensuing poverty any easier to deal with?
If so, I'm in for a box.

Dunno if I can get Kraft Dinner this side of the pond... will a large bag of porridge oats do? If so I'm in!

You knew I couldn't get through this thread without some serious measurebating.
Here's a 100% crop of the upper lefthand corner of a 24-85 shot at 85 mm, either f/7.1 or f/8:
http://home.comcast.net/~trwilk3/Images/2485_1.jpg
Same lens, same scenario after a serious cleaning:
http://home.comcast.net/~trwilk3/Images/2485_2.jpg
A little better, but bad compared to the 28-105 at around 80 mm, f/7.1:

The results were typical of various aperture settings and at various zoom settings. I think I know why he was selling this lens.

Hey, I can keep the 28-105 for those light days!
Honestly, I don't know why I didn't just go for the L in the first place.
I'll take all the macaroni and cheese I can get. It'll go well with some salt-cured road kill and stolen vegetables from the neighbor's garden. :)

The 24-70 is my 'defauLt' Lens. It stays on the one body aLmost aLL the time. I do the Lens swapping on the other body so I'LL aLways have the 24-70 avaiLable. It is the most versatiLe Lens I own and consistentLy gives the best image quaLity. I couLdn't imagine Life without it.
You wiLL feeL that way, too.

Tom,
Don't know if this interests you,. but I found a "less than mint" 28-70mm f/2.8 L for only $600.00 after keping my eye open for about two months...
...I was actually going to get a Tokina or Tamron or soemthing in this range.. as I jsut don't shoot with it often enough to feel that I needed this one to be an L...
...but when I saw the used one for $600.00 I jumped,. and needless to say,. I now use this range more often!
Just a thought.

Oh, I don't know - I have the 24-70 and the 28-135 IS, and even though the camera is stored in the bag with the 24-70 on it, I find uses for the 28-135. So now we'll have to talk Tom into getting a 28-135 as well (here we go again  ).
And, CDS, you've had the '1D arrived today' in your signature for a couple of days now - how many do you actually have? I think you're hoarding...

Just get it! Why? Let me tell you why.
1) I tried to be cheap, and did some research and was looking at the 17-40mm f/4. Boy was I in great agorny. All the sleepless night deciding, deep inside you know 24-70mm f/2.8 is among one of the top Canon Zoom lenses, the other would be the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS (bare in mind I am not talking about Primes here).
2) I looked at Tamron 28-75mm DI XR, and just can't quite risk going for a non Canon lens that might have compatibility issues down the road.
3) You will spend more money upgrading slowly than to go for a great lens right off the bat.
4) When I whip out my 24-70mm f/2.8L in front of a total stranger in a park and ask if I can photograph her, she agreed! http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=28610 now THAT has to be worth the price of the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L USM hehehehe

Ferdinand

I find that Top Ramen helps to ease my pain, it's difficult trying to figure out how to wear the cellophane wrappers though. :eyes Ah, so THAT'S why you guys go for the Kraft. I sure do like how my 70-200 L glass works with my 10D. :D

I suspect that you're right - the 24-85 is generally a pretty decent lens. This one just had a knack for softness, particularly in the upper lefthand corner. It probably needs adjustment, but considering what I paid for it, that wouldn't be cost-effective. At any rate, its history now, having found its way to a broker - I won't sell a known defect here or at FM.

Damn,
I missed all the fun of helping Tom spend all his money. That is what I get for going away over night and not bringing the laptop with me.
Anyway here are the proddings I would have used-
1) Go for it
2) Pick up the damn phone. I'll send ya a quarter
3) Got 3 cases of Kraft Diner. 1 is on its way to you right now.
4) You really need this lens.
The rest I'll save for the next purchase

I just don't understand. Why has SPAM taken a back seat the the Kraft cheeeeeesey dinners? When I was a young man and an "L" struck my fancy we would eat SPAM. All you young pups eating high on the hog Kraft dinners after the purchase of a lens. What is happening to the society we live in? :D :D

I remember those days! I could spend about $60 and feed myself breakfast, lunch, and dinner for 2 weeks except for a little dinner at Mom's once a week and eating the $2.95 fish dinner special for lunch every Friday at the local pub near work. And I had to do that to make my house payment of $426 per month - things were that tight in those days.
I remember when I got my second job - what a relief. It put an extra $60 in my pocket every week just for working 20 hours a week. Nothing even remotely resembling "L" glass in those days.
