Nictitating membrane is the third clear eyelid here is a picture that shows it half closed, notice it operates vertically.

I'm not sure, I'm sure it is good until the young leave the nest Several months. I'm putting together a photographic reality series of Eagles from mating through raising of the young. I'm also setting up for a new project with Great Horned Owls.
