G'day all!

This is my first post here and I just wanted to see what people's reaction would be to this shot. Where could it be improved or could it be better composed?

Thanks in advance,

Nice lighthouse and clouds.
The composition is not too good - it would have been better if you had placed the lighthouse to the left of the picture. That can still be achieved with a crop to the left of the picture.

Add some saturation which will increase the blues and the green grass - you might also like to try and lighten the grass area which will help to bring it more into the picture.

Also you need to rotate the image counter clockwise to straighten the lighthouse up.

Regards
David

Thanks for the comment Meerkat

I did follow some of your suggestions and the results is below:

The colours are a lot brighter and the lighthouse is more or less straight now.

looks a lot better now! it seems like it's leaning to the left... :)

if you take another picture, see if you can capture it's height - lay under it and take a picture up, have a person near it or a bird on the railing. it looks a little "short".

If you're using Photoshop... Take the Measure Tool and run it down the edge of the lighthouse. You can see the resulting angle in the Info Box. Then Rotate the image and type in the angle, or negative angle, or subtract from 90, or... It always takes me 2 tries to get it right.

Since lighthouses are often broader at the base you may have to do this on both sides and average the angle to rotate. Sometimes you can measure once from the top center to the bottom center - but it doesn't look easy to find the exact center of the bottom in this picture.

Nice pic,
i definitely like the second, because of the rule of thirds(off center).

The ground looks great, but the light house itself seems to need more light.

i wish we had light houses here in texas

I like #2 just the way it is. My square says the lighthouse is tapered and the prespective is not square with the fence. Not sure you can do any better..

G'day!

Thank you for your kind replies.

Ryuwulf>Just for you I've uploaded other pics http://members.oztralia.com/~bfeldman/index.html of the same lighthouse. I hope you enjoy those despite poor composition.

Scottes>Thank you for your tip. In the picture above the left hand edge is 90 degrees after rotation. I didin't even know there was a Measure tool in PS and did it by good old Eyeball MkI
