Sorry if this has been discussed to death but search is not very good when looking for numbers.

Anyway, I ordered the mentioned lens and I'd like to know if it's even acceptable with 1.4x or 2.0x extenders? Sample pics appreciated if available.

I don't have this 70-200/4L. The aperture of 70-200/4L + 2.0TC will be f/8. As far as I know, you will have to do manual focus unless your camera body is under EOS 1 series.

With 1.4 it'll be 5.6 so it will autofocus?

Are the Sigma and Tamron etc. TC's compatible and reasonably good? Canon TC's are really expensive.

You'll eventually want to order the tripod ring for this lens, especially if you're going to be using the extenders. I suppose that's one of the reasons they sell it for so much less than other L lenses, but it really needs the tripod ring, and one is not included with the lens.

Try these links for 1x and 2X compatability with this lens.

So with 2x it wont autofocus that I understood. The second table isn't that clear at all, with 1.4x it'll be at 5.6 and autofocus with how many points or at all?

With the 1.4X it will autofocus with as many points as you want :)

With the 2X it will not AF at all unless you get one of the 1D bodies.

I'd go for a 1.4X first,. retain the AF and better Image quality.

I use that lens with the kenko 1.4x pro TC. Was $169 from b&h... I think.

Now that I'm getting to the topic of achieving as much as possible with as little (=little to carry) equipment as possible, what are the ways of getting macro photos with this lens?

Is the Canon 500D available in this size (67mm if I remember correctly)? How big a magnification would it give? What about closeup filters? Could I get it to 1:1 and would these restrict my focusing area badly?

Excellent question about the 500D in 67mm. i have looked for it (and for the 250D as well) but couldnt find it anywhere. although i saw some post of photo taken with the 70-200 f4 plus 250D filter. if i find the linkagain i ll let you know.

What is the difference between Canon's 250D and 500D compared to like B&W Closeup lense +3 (or similar)? Canon lenses seem to be terribly expensive compared to for example B&W.

i dont know much about the macro filtres, i have just started to investigate. canon makes two types of marco filters the xxx and the xxxD.

from what i understood, the D is for "Double" and are best suited for telephoto lenses., The D filter are the combination of two glasses which allow the distorsion and chromatic aberation to be reduced. Although you dont need D for less than 70 mm focale lenses.

note that the "non D" filtres are less expensive than the D but still more expensive than the one on the link you gave (thanks for this link by the way) :)

i personnaly would go for cheap filtres before i can compare the quality.

I have the 70-200mm F/4 & use the x1.4 extender look on my Pbase site and the jet pic is a good example. I have a couple of others but the quatilty is the same, just have not taken the time to post. It's under the Need for Speed.
