Has anyone any experience of using the new Canon 70-200mm f/4 IS with an extender? I have read comments that state that the non IS version is okay with a 1.4x extender but there is a loss of image quality with the 2x extender. Is this the same with the new IS version?

That is the general truth, that 2x or 3x telextenders magnify even a good len's flaws too greatly, whereas a good 1.4x can be used with a good lens with little visible effect. Even a 1.4x can magnify a mediocre lens's flaws a lot with visible degradation. If you want to see effect of a 1.4x on 70-200L Canons, see photozone.de tests

I have the f/4IS and a kenko 1.4X -slower AF, darker viewfinder, but the IQ is pretty good. I suggest that it's best to use it on the long end and not at 70mm

I also own the 70-200 f/4 IS and recently purchased the 1.4x L extender,I must say thus far I'm not overly happy with the results. What I'm finding is the focus is good works with the IS well colors good but sharpness falls off. Without the extender the lens is very sharp you add sharpening in cs2 and really doesn't change the image much calls for very little, with extender takes more but also seems as if the focus (sharpness) isn't dead on. Now i realize that the extender will have this effect but I almost think they might be more suited for the big primes, maybe some more shooting and different setting will make for better results!!

No problems here with the 1.4X, but then with the XT/350D I always focused twice to get sharp images. WIth the 400D it isn't necessary anymore, most fo the time anyway. BTW, considering the sharpness of the IS version I expect even the 2X to give decent results. With the non-IS they certainly were passable, and I expect the IS to perform even better.
I'll go and try it out next week or so :).
Kind regards, Wim

I just got the x2 Canon II for my 70-200 2.8 IS L lens, I will take some test photos tomorrow, and create a comparison. Many say the IQ loss will be great, but I am thinking it should not be that bad. We will see.

So, did you take any photos with your 2x TC or what? Please show me some samples! Thanks.
