Just noticed something on the menu on my 10D. Between Video system and Format there is a choice called Communication / Normal or PTP. What is it? It is not in my manual. I have Firmware Ver. 2.0.1 Please help.

Computers communicate with Canon cameras using a set of commands.. or a language.. or more accurately, a protocol.. They don't support mass storage.. This means you can't treat the flash card as if it were a floppy drive the way some cameras can.

Your camera supports two protocols..

First is Canon's proprietary protocol that it's used on it's digicams for some time now.. This is what Zoombrowser uses to talk to your 10D when it fetches images. This is what you get when you choose 'normal'

Second is PTP, or 'picture transfer protocol'. This mode has recently been adopted as a standard by most camera manufacturers.

Windows XP supports PTP.. This means you can plug your camera into any XP machine and read it without having to install any special programs or drivers..

This isn't in the Manual.. At least not the early ones.. The option to choose PTP appeared in one of the firmware upgrades..
