I watched the movie "300" last night and the gloomy effect on the entire movie was great. How would I achieve this? I'm sure they shot the entire movie with a filter on the camera, right?

Experimentation is key!! Just start whacking layers together and alter blending modes. Eventually you'll come across something similar. From what i recall though, it looks like the effect is similar to what can be produced by duplicating a layer, set blending to soft light, bump up the contrast, and destaurate the top layer to a point you're happy with. Off the top of my head. Maybe do a colour selection (red probably) and increase saturation in that channel. Let me know how that works.

Eyelikedurt, I tried your method and it seems to not be dirty enough. You were dead on with the soft light suggestion though. I loved that movie, and I like that effect, so I'm going to try and perfect it today. Thanks for the great start.

Hmm, perhaps once youve got as far as the layers, desturation etc you could add another layer of a slightly grimy brown/grey and alter blending options, then selectively erase the areas you want to look clea (highlights/reds etc)

i havent tried any of the above suggestions, im just hypothesising, so let me know (and show) what your attempts turn out like.

cheers!!

Sorry I haven't responded. I didn't get an e-mail to notify me that the thread had been replied to.

I haven't had the chance to try this yet. Leaving for Florida in the morning.

Grphx, have you had any luck since your last post?

i just found a book called 'the art of 300' in Waterstones.

they described the colour treatment briefly and from what i can get from their description of the 'crush' (their term for the effect) they've boosted the shadow and highlight contrast. Id make a seperate layer, make the contrast adjustments, overlay it, alter the blending, and then tweak the colour saturations of your selected areas.

Still yet to try this though. Spartan warriors aren't too prolific in my village (thank god.....or Alexander)
