I've got most of the "L"'s and had a 28-135 IS USM that was recently sold with my D30.
I sold it--not because I was unhappy with it but--because I needed a lens to go with the D30 body and I was concerned that perhaps I would be out one day, take a shot that turned out to be extra special, and would be sorry I wasn't carrying the 28-70L.

Now, I'm wrestling with the decision to: a. get a "carry around lens" at all or B. If I do, will it be the 24-85 or the 28-135 IS USM.

I've read that despite the Photodo ratings indicating that the 28-135 is superior, some have found the 24-85 to yield better color and definition.

You folks on this forum have lots of experience.
Have any of you wrestled with this problem? And what did you decide?

I used to use canon 24-85 usm as carry round on Film. My agencies accepted tranny's taken on it alongside those taken on L lenses. You could see the difference under 8x Lupe not sure you would on D30. David

I also have the 24-85mm. I am really happy with it. Fast AF, sharp. If I were to purchase another lens it would be tough to choose between this and the Sigma EX 24-70 f2.8

I really like my 24-85. Its sharp, good contrast, and great color rendition. (And this is coming from a Leica user in withdrawal).
