In JASC PaintShop, there is an option to change the number of pixels per inch as a preference. It defaults at 72. What happens when you change that number? I am wondering if it defaults low to accommodate all printers, but that it would be preferable to use a much higher number?

72 dpi/ppi is the default since it most closely approximates the display/monitor resolution. You will want closer to 300dpi for best printer output or you will either have to stretch the image to maintain size (usually done by the software when it prints) or end up with a smaller image upon printing when the 72 dpi are packed to 300 dpi for the print.
